I am so very sorry for your loss!  It is truly a tragedy and I can not believe you were attacked by some of these women on here.  Please know that not everyone is so cold and thoughtless as some of these women who I feel personally attacked you for sharing your story........ And before anyone corrects me,   I am FULL aware of the date of the original post and do not give a ****!  I just now came across it, and as someone who just lost two of the most cherished people in my life ( my granny to cancer and my childhood BFF to suicide ) in the recent months, I couldn't imagine someone being so insensitive during this trying time!  I will pray for your heart to heal as it will take time and if you EVER need to vent, you can always pm me!  God bless you and your family.....

Well said, Barbi!  InHonorOfMaryWright, I am truly sorry to hear of the loss of your mother.  I realize  people who have WLS place a lot of hope in the surgery and, yes, almost all surgeries "can" have complications.  However, the flavor I'm getting here is those of you who are either success stories (so far, that is) or are contemplating having this surgery are basically treating Mary Wright as if she is the "sacrificial lamb", the "token death".  This is unacceptable and I sure as heck wouldn't be comforted by the "thousands of others" who didn't have comps.  What is Mary's daughter supposed to do....put away her grief and be ever-so-happy for you? Just about everyone who I have known that has had this surgery has insisted that as long as they do "everything right", bad things won't happen to them.  Two or three years later after they've developed their first vitamin deficiency, even after "doing everything right", they start to realize that there IS another side of WLS.  I commend this girl for coming on here and telling the truth, the truth that most newbies or hopeful pre-ops DON'T want to hear.  You NEED to hear everything.  No, not to take the joy out of your experience or change your mind about having the surgery or rain on your parade.  Just to fully inform you of the good, the bad and the ugly and so you will realize that the bad and ugly can be just as much of a reality as the good.

Topic: RE: Freedom!-Moving on beyond the lapband

I got banded and did pretty well for about the first year... weight loss was good, consistent, etc... then I started getting reflux... i got unfilled and was told it would get better, so I waited for 6 weeks, and it did abate some, but as soon as I got my first fill, it came right back, so I've now been unfilled for 16 months, which is darn near useless.  I lost 67 lbs in a year, but have now gained back about 10-15 depending on the week.  I now know that I cannot live with the reflux and my surgeon told me the band has to come out, so I'm getting a revision done.  I feel like I was pretty successful with the band, but who knows, maybe I might have lost a bunch then gained it back... lots of folks seem to have that happen.  I just know that since I need to get it out, I'm going ahead with a revision to the DS.  I originally considered the RNY, but think the DS has a better long term prospect for me, even though I'd probably be considered a lightweight (I cant even BELIEVE I typed those words!!)... I dont want to have another WLS... I want this to be my last, and I see so many happy DSers that, really, I'm 100% clear that it's the only way to go.  Since my surgery is a revision of a surgery which was never originally paid for by insurance, I figure I'll be 100 by the time they agree to pay for the revision (read never!).  So, I'm self pay and going for it.  I don't diss the band at all... if it wasn't for the reflux I think I'd have done really well with it... again, who knows long term... but since I gotta pay to get this sucker out now, or else possibly deal with esophageal erosion down the line, I'm going for the surgery I think will give me the best results long term.

Topic: RE: Can't Decide Between Lap Band and Bypass...OPINIONS, PLEASE!!!!
I had the DS instead of RNY or a lap band in part because I felt the long term maintenance was more manageable for me, and it looked like it had fewer complications the farther out you got (assuming you are compliant with your labs and taking vitamins, that is vital for DS or RNY), and had the best long term success.  I don't know of many RL people with WLS, but am casually acquainted with a few, and the only reason I even know they had WLS was because we were at potlucks when they had urgent difficulties, one having to go to the hospital (that time it was slippage, since then he has developed erosion problems). All surgery has risk, but the latest data show the mortality from surgery is about the same for rny and ds, although my own surgeon was actually much lower than the average, which I would suggest looking at the actual surgeons record regardless of type of surgery you choose and making sure you get the best surgeon in their field. I had been scared out of the band due to long term problems, and had scheduled a RNY, and only learned of the DS a few months before I was to go under the knife. I heard about it on this site, and did more research, and told my insurance the DS was clearly what I needed for long term success, and they didn't cover it (they do now, but too late for me). I chose to self pay for the DS, rather than to get a band or RNY paid for by my insurance, and my only regret is not doing much sooner. I wish you the best of luck on your weight loss! Deanne

I'm sorry your feeling so down. Although I had a different surgery than you, there are some common things, such as your hormones being completely out of whack for months after surgery. Also, it takes several months for the anesthesia to completely leave your system, and thats huge. The pain gets better by the day, and so does the eating, and the blue feelings. Make sure your doctor is on top of things and you have anti-nausea or antacid meds if you need them. Try to do something nice for yourself today, like get a pedicure or or massage, or maybe just visit a park if it's nice out. Give yourself some time, and I PROMISE you it gets better. Deanne

In the nicest way possible, I want to say that I hope you don't end up wishing you had chosen the DS to begin with.  Ya might wanna go over to the DS board and talk to all the folks over there who have revised from both the band and the RNY to the DS..  The statistics are the best, and It might save an extra surgery for you, ya never know!  good luck!

I haven't had surgery and I am NOT having DS.  I have read a few people here who are further out who are suffering fromreal malabsorption issues, but from what I have read you will be ok, with complete compliance with the supplements.  that is the main thing with DS is you HAVE to take your supplements with absolute strict compliance. good luck- and my best wishes for your surgery

I hope you r not implying that taking supplements is not as important if you get the RNY.  B/c you HAVE to take your supplements with absolute strict compliance when you have the RNY - JUST LIKE THE DS.

Topic: RE: I hate my band.
How refreshing to find people that can relate to my problem.  I was banded over a year ago, and have been miserable ever since.    I went through all the classes and counseling, and felt I was prepared to make the committment.   The lap band hasn't held up it's end of the bargain.   My understanding of the lap band was that it would restrict the amount of food, not what kind of food you ate.   I also feel that I am being dismissed, and not taken seriously about my concerns.  It went well initially, until I got to the part of introducing solid foods.  It has been over a year now, and I still can't tolerate meat, vegetables, fruits, anything that is healthy for me.  I can't be on a liquid diet forever, if I could I wouldn't have had the surgery.  But, chocolate is no problem. Cheese puffs, no big deal.   Oh yea, we forgot to tell you, anything that breaks down in your mouth before swallowing is pretty easy to digest,  but you shouldn't be eating them.   I have severe acid reflux,  and indigestion so bad that it actually hurts my teeth. I throw up anything and everything.   Every time I go back to Cedars Sinai, it is the same old thing.  I tell them I can't eat nutritionally without suffering severe consequences.  They ask for an example, (strawberry, any meat, eggs) everyone I have ever given them , their standard reply is "Well that is hard to digest"   I told the doctor that I was healthier prior to my lap band than after, his statement was sarcastic "Maybe we should be put you in the record books"........................................  I would like to get it removed......... and get on with my life.

The % rate of complications is alot less these days then even 4 years ago, You also have to remember that if very easily could of been the surgeon, I work at a hospital 5 days a week, we do many bariatric surgeries and do not see these kind of complications on new surgeries, techniques are becoming better and better, it's just a shame that good people like your mom had to suffer so much in her battle with obesity. Alot of people have been saved with these surgeries, we must all remember this too.
