You'll stop being miserable when you choose to.

Topic: RE: Help

One thing I found very helpful in following the pace set out for me in my wls clinics guidelines was that it was just that, a guideline. That is to say, if you don't feel ready for thicker foods, don't do it. Don't freak out if you aren't exactly where your guidelines say you might be right now. I have a lot of trouble with meat in general and eggs too. So I eat what I can - I seem to manage lentils and beans very well - also cheese and yogourt. Personally, I think the amount of protein is somewhat exaggerated but nevertheless I just do my best. As for walking, I remember at about 3 weeks out I would sometimes get a pain inside when I walked or a very sore back (lower addomen too). I just slowed down and took shorter walks until I could build up - you're still healing. These kinds of major lifestyle changes are not easy to make but they do force us to find other (preferably better ways to cope). Maybe this is a good time to get out and give yourself some time with friends or a special treat to congratulate yourself like a pedicure or manicure? I hope this helps a little.

Surgery date is Oct. 17th, 2013 in Ottawa. I was referred to the clinic in September 2012. The person performing my surgery is Dr Amy Neville.

What type of surgery did you have?

You had major surgery first of all and it will take time for your body to recover from the stress of it...ie you will be very tired...just make sure you drink enough liquid to you stay hydrated...your body is also hungry because you are eating very few calories...also not having any carbs...the pain will get better...drink warm liquids it will help with your stomach...many of us could not drink cold liquids for a long time after surgery...so warm up the liquids...tea..chicken broth etc...that will go down easier...your body will adjust to not eating carbs and slowly your energy will return...your body should not feel hungry but your head misses eating and 90% of our hunger is in our heads...so you just have to chill out and get through this...it's difficult for all of us in different ways...what will NOT be difficult is when you see the results and the weight is flying off your body...but again the physical stuff might take awhile...It took me about a month to feel pretty normal...by the time I had my first soft boiled egg I was already better that was three weeks out...give yourself some time and don't worry...regret is normal but it won't last long...keep posting...I also think that you have lost a great big friend right now which is the comfort of food in your life..that is difficult especially at the holiday time but trust me you will be so happy in a few months with your results and you will adjust to your new stomach very nicely...stay on the boards and post and get support..go to your surgeon's support groups and let us know how you do....SEAVIEW

Topic: RE: I gained 40lbs in 2 months

RNY does mess with metabolism.  For a few years, we don't eat much and then get to where we can eat more and also our bodies start absorbing calories again.  After about three years, it is extremely easy to regain weight and extremely difficult to lose what has been regained.

My strategy is to weigh myself every morning.  If you do a daily weigh in, you are less likely to get shocked with a 40 pound gain.  If you just eat and drink what you please and don't weigh yourself, then this is what happens so easily.

An 800 calorie diet is what it takes for me to lose one pound a week.  Making sure that most of the 800 calories come from lean dense protein can help.  Avoid almost any carbs during this weight loss period.  Bread, rice, noodles, potatoes, pasta, and sugar will cause unbelievable hunger and cravings.

You are in a very difficult situation and doing what it takes to pull yourself back.  We do not get nearly enough education on this and it seems that many doctors and nutritionists just let us fail on our own.  I was told from day 1 that malabsorption would end and that regain would be difficult to lose.
