Has anyone had neurological problems post op
Just wonder if any one has had neurological problems after surgery.
I had surgery June 2001, went well done well. Had 2 hernia repairs, tummy tuck and breast reduction. Was iron defic. 2 years after surgery. But, is normal now all other blood work has been normal no other deficincies (sp). Last November I was diagonsised with ALS "Lou Gehrig's Disease" had muscle weekness in right leg. I believe it is 2 whole different things, doctors do to after all blood work is normal. But, just wonder?
Thanks for listening and any info!!!

Hi Roni,
My Mom was diagnosed with ALS back in 5/03 her's also started in the right leg and progressed to her left leg until she couldn't walk with a cane and needed a wheelchair. Unfortunately her's progressed quickly and she passed away a year later 4/04. She was only 51. I walk every year to help find a cure. I had the Lap Band placed two weeks before she passed and it truely saved me because I know I would have ate and ate from sadness. She also wanted the Band placed but was never able to due to the disease and she died over weight. I am losing weight for both of us.
My Mom swears that it was the exercise she started that caused the initial symptoms of ALS. From what I read, in some people it will lie dormant until something "tramatic" happens in her case a certain exercise machine that strained her back and legs. It took the Dr's a full year to actually DX her. I wish you well and please know that there are many of us out there that supporting a cure for this aweful disease. Hugs, Karianne
Hi Cathy,
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Basically the motor neurons degenerate and don't sent impulses to the muscles, eventually the person loses all voluntary muscle movement (atrophy sets in) including the arms, legs, speech, swallowing (usually resulting in a feeding tube) and breathing. It's devastating and there's no cure only treatment for the symptoms like Baclophen to relax your muscles.
It is very rare and hard to dx. You can do a search on the internet. Initial symptoms usually include increased muscle weakness, slurred speech, tripping/falling. What kind of trouble are you having with your left leg? You can e-mail me private if you wish. Karianne

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I wish you the best of luck.
My mother had a tummy tuck and about 2 years later was having trouble lifting her foot to go upstairs. It was very slow moving but eventually she was unable to walk. She is now on a vent at home, only able to move from the neck up and a small amount of movement in her hands and fingers, but that is getting worse as well. We always thought there was a connection between the surgery and her ALS but I could never find anyone else who had these problems. I read a study online that showed patients who had obesity surgery were at some risk for developing neuro problems. They ranged from minor to wheelchair bound.
I hope this helps. It would be interesting to know just how many people out there share the same story.
Amy
