Hi FlowerChild80...what are your regrets?
My date is coming up and I am looking for some "cons" to counter all the "pros"...whatever they may be. I just feel I want to know both sides before doing this.
Thanks :)  Kd

I am so sorry you had to go through all of that. I had rny on 6/18/01 did amazing!!!  my starting weight (looking into GB) was 289. Got down to 265 the day of surgery w/ a WL goal of 140... I got down to 108 at my lowest. surgeon told me to gain some wt. at my 1 yr post op apt. I tried! Finally gained due to a migraine med I was put on. p.s. didn't really have migraines pre-op. my major co morbidity was secondary infertility, joint pan, borderline sleep apnea, & borderline diabedic. while I did well for quite a few years somewhere around the 6 yr mark, I started to feel like I was 80 yrs old all my vitamin levels are sooooo low I was put on prenatal vit's 100,000 IU's vit D  325 mg Iron 3x'z a da.y it's rediculous! All my levels are back up to norm, but I still feel like I'm that "almost 300lb woman" now in a 135 lb body and I'm ony 35. Every day I suffer w/  pain in all my joints and migraines and I think "wow, I would kill to be able to take motrin again!" then I find out from my GP (who BTW) did his internship w/ a bypass surgeon, that many people suffer from similar issues, including fibromyalgia etc. Sooooo many day's this past 3 years, I wake up wishing I never had this surgery. And it's sad to say "Newbies" are not tooo kind. I hope they do better.

I am a nurse, and I am sorry you have not been well/. I do want to ask if you are certain this is indeed related to your surgery and not something else that has just coincidentally developed? Fibro is fibro and migraines are migraines and neither is generally made better or worse by weight loss.( except strain on joints) Have you seen a rheumtologist to rule out any autoimmune disease? Sadly, it is true that these can be triggered by physiacl or emotional stress,so not the surgery per se, but the stress on your body may have triggered something that was dormant before. Good luck!!

This is to the nurse that posted.  These are the kind of comments that are so annoying.  I had 1 cavity my whole life until a couple years after my surgery, then I got 2 more then a few more until now I had 13.  Same with the muscle pain.  Nothing like this has ever run on either side of my family.  If you read these posts you will see that these things are prominent in people that have had the surgery.  I don't think we were all prone to get the same things.

Hi, I had my surgery, rny in feb. of 2004 I believe. I had it open, a lot of pain the first 6 weeks or so.  My doctor was awesome.  I loved that I was losing weight, but hated how I felt every time I ate anything.  I have regained  some weight but manage to diet and get most back off, back to dieting again, which is one of the reasons I had surgery, tired of dieting.  I am glad not to weigh as much, but in some ways sorry .  I thought it was easier to lose weight before surgery.  I still hate feeling bad everytime I eat the wrong thing.  I also think the person above was a jerk, and had no need to respond the way they did.  I have had problems with my teeth alot of cavities, and pain sometimes.  I also have been having muscle pain lately.  In the last 6 weeks or so, I feel like I have over -excersized .  The muscles in my upper arms, thighs, and even butt hurt when I even just stand up.  I don't know if it is fibromyalgia, but I guess I'm going to have to go  see.  I don't know which is worse, the way I felt at 332 lbs. or the thought of having to have false teeth, and the possibility of having pain the rest of my life.  I have small kids and it is starting to worry me that I won't be able to move by the time they grow up, so what part of my life did I improve by having the surgery.  I don't know if I would have this surgery if I had known any of this, but would definitely tell anyone I care about not to.   Can you tell my off-hand how I can tell if it is fibromyalgia?  They didn't tell my I could end up with any of these problems, and when I ask my general physician if it causes any of it, she says no.  I honestly don't think they have a clue.  My surgeon moved out of state, so I haven't been able to ask him any questions.   I think I may e-mail his office to see if I can get a response.  He used to e-mail me back every  time I did in the past.

 Hi everyone!
I had my rny 10/24/04 and I just had my reversal August 24th of this year. I had developed a stricture at my stoma that had been dialated 3x's and it just kept coming back as well as several ulcers around it that would not heal to save myself. I had dropped down to 98 lbs and was horribly malnourished. I had spent 6 wks in the hospital before my surgery trying to get nourished enough to have the reversal. I was finally sent home the week before on home health due to being on TPN. The TPN honestly saved my life while I was waiting on surgery along with blood transfusions and several vitamin/mineral infusions. RNY  CAN be reversed! They CAN put your connect your stomach back and let down your intestines. It is hard to find a surgeon who will do it and even then they will not do it on a whim you have to have medical complications to have this done. It is not a surgery to take lightly at all. They can also revise your rny but, my surgeon would not do a revision on smokers. I am a smoker but, after everything that I have went thru for the past 3 years (the start of the serious complications) I am done and just wanted it reversed. I am still really swollen in my abdomen and did still have nausea and vomitting at first but, I am now keeping things down. I am trying to watch what I do as far as food goes but, I need to put on weight. I think I looked "healthy" at 130 or so. I had developed so many nasty side affects from the malnutrition it is not funny. I still may have to deal with nerve damage for the rest of my life. It is no where near as bad as it was a few months ago so I am praying that it goes completly away. I am also praying that the bone pain goes away. The MN did a number on my bones, muscles, and teeth. I too was suffering from really bad migraines but, I have had them since I was a child. The dr says that they were aggrevated due to malnutrition, dehydration, severe weight loss.
As to the person who got ugly earlier.... I was a HUGE advocate for the rny for the first 2 years I had mine done. I started out at 335lbs but, then things got bad, really bad. I developed infections that tried to kill me because my body could not fight them off. I had horrific pain, I threw up on average of 20+ times a day, My teeth started to crumble, I had eye sight issues, mental issues, reactive hypoglaucema, nuropothy (sp?), bp extremely low but, super fast heart rate, passing out all of the time, falling asleep because I could not stay awake, memory loss, degenerative bone disease in my back and hips, muscle pain and wasting, and MANY other things directly related to the weight loss surgery and malnutrition. I took all of my vitamins like I was supposed to. I did not use any NSAIDS. I was dying and I mean that in a literal sense. They did my reversal as an emergency type situation. I did however, have to wait until I was healthier before I had it done. With the help of the TPN I went from 98lbs to 108 before surgery but, it took over 6 weeks to get me there. Let me assure you that some people do great with this surgery but, others like myself ( and if you google you will find a yahoo group of people) who's body just could not handle this surgery for one reason or another.
I pray that I do not get as big as I was before but, even with having type 2 diabetes, being out of breath all of the time and all of the weight, I was healthier at 335 than I have been the past 3 years. I'd rather be big than dead.
God Bless Dr. Eagon for saving my life!

I am sorry you had the original problems...Any thoughts on what was caused your initial problems and was there in anything that was missed that could have prevented or foreseen that there may be complications?  Did you have any health issues prior to surgery that made the surgery a higher risk for you.

I am new to the site and still in the research process.  Any more insight would be appreciated.

hello, i started this same way i started at 266 i am now 144
My name is amanda and i have heard that it can be done. actually my d.r has told me i have to have it done but its rough waters bc hes has never actually had to do one so im a little iffy on that. i had my surgery march 14 2012 and three days later i started to go down hill getting very sick from march to june i spent over 50 days in the hospital. one stay was 15 days and my dr is 3hrs away so my kids were not happy. my new stomach actually closed up and i needed it streached twice then the third time is when they found an ulcer. but in may i had to have a feeding tube put in 2 weeks later i had to have it surgical put back in 3 weeks after that it fell out in the middle of the night and was to long everything closed back up again and had to have it surgical put back in again i do also have a marginal ulcer. solid intolerance is a big issue. my dr. wants me to try to keep eating hope that one time it will just work well i cant even eat a bite of food with out my chest hurting about right where the new stomach would be. i was in so much pain the other night i was in a ball on my bed in tears for 2 hrs two days later iwas still in pain just not enough to put me in tears so my dr. office said go to the closest er so i did they said probly gas. of course this hospial near me knows nothing about these surgeries thats why i have to drive 3hrs away. i am just so over getting sick i try something new and i get sick then i laydown and i will be down for hours. around my tube always stinks even with putting meds on it that the dr office told me to get from the store it bleeds every morning i wake up with dry blood draindown my belly and wet yuck blood around under the plastic around my tube. and its so sore around my tube i just wi**** to be over.. my kids wi**** to be over.. i cant work i had to stop going to college and feel like crap all the time im always dehydrated oh and after my 2 tube surgery a week later i had to go back for a blood transfution i was down 2 and having dr try to shove a tube in a hole that is closed up isnt the best either then after it starts bleeding so much it looks like u have a gun shot they finally say oh we cant get it back in. well anyway i know this was alot more then u asked about but my dr has told me the last 3 visits next visit we will talk about setting u up for surgery to reverse it but he also tells me EVEN AFTER THE REVERSAL I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO EAT STILL AND WILL STILL ALWAYS NEED THE FEEDING TUBE!!!!!!!!!!  i even tried eating a damn pickle thats what my dr told me try to eat pickle bc something to do with the skin of it helps ppl keep stuff down well it didnt. i even asked him if it could just be in my head bc of being so sick when pouch closed up and they had to streach it and he said no i do not believe thats what it is but he still doesnt know why and i actually go back to the dr monday the 17th this monday and he is supposed to be doing another scope and blood work to see if anything new is going on and talk about the reversal like i said its just i feel so iffy he said he has never done it but he says he knows how and he does something to the old stomach just incase it ever were to happen he could do it he is a good dr as far as i know. and he has the feeding tube going into my old stomach to make sure it would still accept food. i just dont want to do this and not be able to eat anyway and still be stuck with the tube i am 31 years old and have 3 great children im scared i have to say.
