Nauseous

Today was probably the worst day of nauseousness and sickness I have ever experienced, I have been trying to have my protien shakes but I am so nauseous all the time I can't get them down. In fact I can hardly get anything down that doesn't have a good smell to it, I don't know if this is just me but I have noticed that my smell senses have been heightend, and like I said if it doesn't smell good I can't eat it, and I get really sick.

Does anyone have any suggestions because if this doesn't stop I may have to drop out of School and move back home.

Even if you were to tell me how long nauseousness lasted for you.

Hi i had my RNy surgery back in May 2009. I have had a ton of issues with the nausea and vomiting.. I was in the hospital 2times because of it. The dr put me on Zofran in the hospital and reglan once i got home. I am now on prilosec and reglan indefinitly... So if you are having problems, see if your dr can try reglan and prilosec combo..works for me... also there is another drug called phenergan and compazine (which come in pills and ~sounds gross~ suppossitories if need be). I have phenergan in my fridge as a back up..

Hope this helps.

Love always, Jennifer

I am only 3 weeks out, but I am in the same boat. My Mom keeps harping on me to get my protein in or I am going to lose all my hair. I am more worried about dehydration (though don't relish the thought of losing my already very fine hair). My doctor seems to think it is just allergy drainage. It doesn't help the daily bouts of dry heaves. Zofran and phenergan have absolutely no effect at all. Nothing tastes good. I don't want anything. Haven'been hospitalized but I am afraid of it coming to that. Everyone seems to say to me "this will pass, get over it". It is hard to buck up when you can't get through the day without horrible nausea.

I was in your same boat at 3 weeks. I am now almost 6 weeks. I still have nausea but was hospitalized twice for dehydration and had 2 dilations for strictures. If it gets worse and you start throwing up dont hesitate to call the doctor. Hope you start to feel better soon.

Thanks, Nathalie. I "throw up" (it is always just dry heaving) several times a day. The doctor ordered xrays of the whole system, which I did on Friday. Just thinking about that stuff I had to drink is making me dry heave right now. So far, it looked like everything was going through really quickly. I could see possibly some blockage in the colon. I am trying to work that out with enemas since Milk of Magnesia and suppositories aren't working. Also going to start on a stool softener. I am trying my best to avoid hospitalization for dehydration. I'm only getting in around 30-40 oz a day. And only maybe 15-30 grams of protein.

First... let me comment on the sense of smell.  When you are nauseous, your sense of smell is higher.  That makes perfect sense.  I went through the same thing.

Second... have you talked to your physician about the nausea?  If you still have your gallbladder, that may be the problem.  I had to have mine taken out three months after my RYGB.

There is no way to know how long you will suffer with the nausea.  Most of the time, it doesn't last more than 6 months or so.  It is very rare for that feeling to never go away.

There are SEVERAL kind of medications.  I was on three at once.  I was on Reglan four times a day, Zofran 8mg dissolvalbe tabs every 8hrs as needed, and another medication that starts with a M.  It isn't usually prescribed for something other than nausea, but they said that it can help with it.

I am have the same issues and feeling. Except I haven't thrown up once until today. My sence of smell is like when I was pregnant. I am on a anti nausea meds but it doesn't seem to work most of the time. I think it's just keeping me from throwing up. Today I tried a chewable protein tablet and experience 10 min of dry heaving. I'm starting to get worried because I'm not only getting protein in but not getting liquids in general in or food.  I stopped taking my anti acid last week & I started again today. I'm hoping that will change everything. I am worried I made the wrong decision. I did this because I wanted to have a longer life for my son but I'm worried I just messed up my body worse then it was before. I am also almost 2 months out and only has lost 35 pds.
