RNY reversal

I am in the same boat you are in. My surgery was Sept. 10th and I researched for 2 years before I had this surgery. Like you said it all looks good on paper, but I am miserable also. I HATE the protien shakes and I HATE the taste of sugar free stuff. Everything has a gritty taste to me incl. water and I don't understand why. I feel like I have a constant film in my mouth no matter how many times I brush my teeth. I am always tired and I do take my vitamins. I just do not feel like myself anymore. The weight loss is good and all but to have so many restrictions is just crap! I get cravings so bad for a coke! I know the point is to get healthy and lose weight but at what sacrifice? If I had to do it over again I would have done whatever it took to lose the weight on my own rather then resort to surgery.  You would think in this day and age they would come up with something better.

Hi all, If you are so new to the gastric bypass family, I urge you to just give it a few months.  I know its really tough, but those first few months are worth the effort.  I am on this conversation because I was looking for reversal discussions and info.  I am 6 years post g/bypass and have lost 135 lbs.  I too went through the newbee hell, but you too will make it through.  I had not only the terrible feeling in my stomache and lack of energy from so little calories going in.  I hated the protein shakes and diet food.  My memory and other cognitive problems were issues for about 4 months.  I had to have others review my written work before submitting as I had trouble with writing and staying on task.  Eventually I was able to eat normal food again.

About 9 months ago I developed ulcers and although they have resolved with medication, the nausea and vomiting with anything more than liquids continues.  I have had rounds with TPN (total protein nutrition through a central line in my chest), and now my surgeon is strongly suggesting reversal as my overall health is reliant on the protein through a tube.  Reveral is only done if your health is at risk - basicallly is there a chance you could die if you don't have it reversed.  The reversal is much more traumatic to your body with additional surgical risks, and even after reversal, your digestive system may not go back to normal.  It is only looked at in extreme cases.

So after all this, those of you who are only a few weeks out, please give it a chance.  Call your doc is you have problems, they are used to the questions and feel free to ask other patients on this site, they are a wonderful resource.  Take care, you are in my prayers.

I can't WAIT for the ulcers, malnutrition & feeding tubes, dehydration, forgetfulness, having to get my tube stretched, infections, hair loss, bone loss, constant pain, and all the other wonderful things I've now learned I can look forward to that my dr never mentioned.
I feel betrayed by the WLC I went to.  The only negative they mentioned was the usual blah blah about the risk of surgery and how it's just like getting a hernia or gall bladder surgery.  Nothing to worry about.
No one mentioned ANY of the above or any of the 5000 other bad things people are having to deal with from the surgery!

Even with all the bad things happening, its still better than where I would have been if I had not had the surgery.  I was out of control Type 2 Diabetic, High BP off the charts, High Cholesterol out of control, Asthma out of control, and in so much pain that a wheelchair was imminent.  I still would not have changed the decision to have the original surgery.  While true your surgeon should have fully informed you, some of the things are only applicable to a slight few.  Those kinds of ratios are typically not discussed by any medical professional, unless its relavent.  I suppose relavance of what is important is an individualized issue.  I was in such horrible medical shape prior to my surgery, that these post surgical issues are a piece of cake - in comparrison.
