I was just wondering if any one had problems with anesthetics after surgery? If I take any meds while my stomach is empty (when I wake up from surgery) I will be puking non-stop until I can get some food in me....I can't even take pain killers...so how would this work with WLS? I've asked the docs and they think it is just from dehydration???

Sonia, I know it's been a while since you posted this but see you haven't had surgery yet.  I've had severe nausea after anesthesia from previous surgeries.  Before, my RNY I emphasized to the anesthesiologist I get very ill when waking up and he gave me some med in my IV that would help.  This is the first surgery (I've had 4 previous) that I wasn't sick.  Be sure to let your anesthesiologist know they can help. WOOO HOOO someone posted... I don't care how long it has been I've been waiting for someone to post on this. Well were I live they just didn't give a **** no matter how many times I mentioned it to everyone, but my best friend's mom is the head anesthesiologist so hopefully she will be able to direct mine lol. As she can not be a part of my surgery due to personal conflict. I honestly think it is because my stomach is empty I always end up puking at least 3 to 4 times after surgery, unless I have an IV for 3 to 4 days before hand. TY for the reply

Sonia,  I can not take tylenol on an empty stomach, but anesthesia does not bother me,"yet".

I just went for a consult for a revision,(stapling in 87). I had no problem when I had the first surgery, but I agree that you need to talk to anesthesia, and if that does not work, talk to someone higher up. Someone has to listen! Is your Dr unsympathetic also? You are in my prayers.

Sonia, I am also pre-op, but I have also had surgery a few times (luckily I have done well).  I have three friends who are anesthesiologists.  Don't let medical folks blow you off.  If you get sick from anesthesia that is valuable information.  Make sure they all know about it.  As you approach surgery make sure you mention it again.  The day of the surgery your anesthesiologist will talk to you before putting you under.  Make sure s/he knows about your past experiences and be polite but not firm.  If s/he seems to blow you off then ask him/her to specify what can be done to avoid it both during surgery and after.  Anesthesiology (have I spelled that 3 different ways now?) is not just putting a needle in your arm and a gas mask on your face.  It is different for everyone, there are different types and it is important for you to communicate any past problems. All too often we allow the fast pace and the GodLike attitude of medical professionals to turn the most assertive of us into a tiny mouse.  This is YOUR life and YOUR body.  Be persistent, yet cordial with this issue. Hi, I agree with the other responders - make a lot of noise - get your surgeon involved.  Mine is fabulous.  I just had my pre-op yesterday for a 4/24 date and one of the people I met with deals with the anesthesia stuff.  Since I'm on dilantin, they don't usually give me that stuff that keeps you from heaving, but I made a point of telling her that I want it in my IV, so  she made note of it but told me to make sure I repeated myself to the actual anesthesiologist on the day of surgery - when they see certain drugs on your chart, they often assume why you are taking them and don't give that shot, so keep on standing up for yourself and you should be fine.   Good luck, Laurie

I requested no post op pain meds because narcotics and anesthetics make me forget to breathe, and some times puke, but either on it's own is fine. I woke up with no pain at all!!!!!!!! shocked was all I could say! They did end up installing a self pump morphine drip which I never used, but the night nurse nailed me once so I would just go to sleep because I was walking the halls at 2am the night of my operation. LOL     I went med free for 2 days while in the hospital and did a lot of walking which was not a good thing in the end, Come Saturday night, (I went in Thursday morning) I had to ask for T3's. They gave me percs. I took a script for percocet home with me (50) and they lasted me 3 months.  I really had no pain at all, so depending on you try it with out.  Ps I started typing this before I looked at your surg date. So forgive me if you did it already.

Sonia what you need to ak your doctor for is 'an anti-emetic'  . This is a drug that will lessen your chances of being sick after the operation Good luck on the day!
