5 yrs post op RNY.. WEIGHT GAIN.. wanting DS now
Hello,
Yes there is a revisions board for people having failed wls, people convert from RNY to lap band and Lap band to RNY, lap band to DS and vise versa....there are some folks the lap band did not work for and they revised to DS...
I thank god that I got the procedure that seems to be working for me, it is slowly but surely with no complications so far.
But based on your low BMI, I am not sure if it would be wise to even think about DS since this is the most invasive weight loss surgeries there is.. and its main component is malabsorption, I hear most doctors say this weight loss surgery is mainly reserved for the morbidly obese and severly morbidly obese and should not be taken lightly since the risk of malnutrition is much higher with DS than RNY, the sleeve or lap band.
There are a lot of RNY folks now on the lap band board getting revisions due to stretched out pouches after 1-3 years and gaining their weight back...that was my biggest fear in getting RNY...after all that re-arranging the gut you risk gaining weight back and then risk suffering from dumping even after weight gain, now that stinks....
Good luck
N.
Hi Staci -- I too am experiencing some weight gain and need to get back on track! I have absolutely no desire for a revision, but instead want to get back to the healthy way of living that helped contribute to my success after RNY 4 years ago.
Much of my problem centers sround the fact that I am plain lazy and my exercise partner and best friend who held me accountable and was able to inspire me has moved to another state. I think I just need someone to relate to and share the next leg of the journey with. I have gone from 185 (my lowest, and felt/looked the best!) to a new high of 210!! I want to get back to 185. The thing is, I have an appetite and I detest exercising until I'm doing it.
Want to support each other? email me.

I just saw your post from a couple of months ago. I had RNY 4 years ago too and am not doing too good. I'm about right were you are at. I did have a baby 4 months ago, but I had gained that weight back before that. I would love some support getting back to what ever it was before that I was doing. I sure miss being full and not wanting to eat. I'm lazy too. There I said it.
From an insurance standpoint - you're going to have an uphill climb getting an approval with a BMI of 35. 38 is the minimum for most commercial products to consider for any kind of WLS - and you have the extra burden of proving co-morbids, no exceptions. BMI of 40 and above tend to have a better track record of convincing them to cover it.
Revisions in general, regardless of procedure, are harder to get approved, and the DS in particular has its issues with approval, according to those who have posted.
Lapband isn't for everyone, it's not clear if it would be medically indicated as something that would help you in your particular cir****tances - but given your BMI - it "sounds" like it would be the more feasible surgical option.
