Hi I am just wondering when its okay to look into having a revision. I am dieting hard and will still continue to exercise and lead a healthier lifestyle but it is obvious that if I eat more than 500 cal per day I will gain weight and or not loose. The only time I have lost any weight is when I take my calories down below 500 or do fasts. The majority of the weight I lost in the past and here after surgery has come as a result of me fasting. Protein drinks only totaling no more than 550 calories. I also have been hungry from day one and have been able to eat much more than I should even though I don't do this alot every now and again maybe once per month ok twice at the most. But I made a commitment. I did not have surgery to wind up still over 200lbs. But I also don't want to starve myself for the rest of my life while I am still incredibly hungry everyday. And, I exercise 4-6 days per week and yes I get at least 72 ounces of water or more and alas take vitamins, prilosec, etc, etc,.. religously. So why do you ask because I recently started eating regular meals again, protein mostly and I am back up to 63lbs lost instead of 67lbs where I was and I am a few days away from being 6 months out. Please don't tell me I am in starvation mode or everone looses at their own rate( I just can't take hearing that again, that's why I'm not on the main board). Also, I wrote down everything I ate and took it with me to my 2 month w/ doc, nut and pysch and agreed I was eating too much I was at 800-1000 cal per day and had only lost 18lbs since surgery, Total 24. when I took it down I lost an add 22-24 in the next couple of weeks. Its just when I eat regular foods I stay hungry all the time so I want to eat more than 500 calories. The surgery never gave me that not hungry thing it was just less hungry. lol Anyway, I am thinking in order to get to where I want to be My pouch may need to be smaller and or maybe a different surgery for me. I am just wondering at what point do I talk to someone about this ie,.. another doctor/surgeon. Now I can continue to starve work way to hard and loose. But I had this surgery to learn another way. A more healthy way. Just think about this If I had not done the extreme white knuckle dieting I'd sill be at 49 or 50lbs and If I had not chose to try the protein train thing last week and a half I'd be down around 75 or 80 by now. What do I do? wits end here!

I know you don't want to hear this but everyone does lose differently, that being said remember that muscle weighs more than fat and you are working out as you should. Every program is different but mine requires 700 calories per day until goal and then you increase the intake to stabilize the loss. Personally I still do the protein first and use protein shakes as my snacks. Carbs are last on the menu for me. The other thing is that normal bodies can fluctuate with weight gain up to 5 lbs per day so don't be so hard on yourself. As for the revision, I have no idea but would think that you are being impatient and expecting too much from yourself at this point. Stick with the plan and see what happens. I wish you all the best

Hi, I'm so sorry you're in this position. I don't know when it's time to call a WLS procedure "failed" in any kind of medical sense, but if I were in your shoes I'd certainly have labeled it a failure by now, too. It's ridiculous IMO to have to torture yourself like you're describing for every ounce of weight lost and to live in constant fear of regain. There are quite a few people who have had a revision from RNY to Duodenal Switch and had far better success at getting weight off and keeping it off. You might consider asking about this on the Duodenal Switch forum, which is in both the forum dropdown list and the list of all message boards. You can also go to www.duodenalswitch.com and get information there.

Hi Steph, You said you are getting in about 72 oz of water. Maybe you could up the water intake and see what happens. I read your profile.... you look good. I myself started this journey at 334 ( pre consultation) I am hovering at 229. Give or take a pound or two. Are you getting your protein in first , then veggies, then carbs ? My biggest problem is the carbs and grazing so I know where my "stall" comes from. Are you keeping track of your intake on www.fitday.com or www.sparkpeople.com ? I also like to go to www.thinnerself.com , he has charts you can measure your weight loss and inches lost. Good Luck, don't get down on yourself yet. Sandy

I know of several people who have had revisions from "failed" RNY's to the DS...one is my best friend. All have gone the revision route in different time frames so "when" is a personal issue. I think you first need to decide if you want to go the revision route, research the best surgery options for you then start talking to others who've been there, find a GOOD doc (for the surgery you've chosen) and go from there. I do know that .... especially with my best friend ... the revision to the DS was the best thing she'd ever done. It has been four years now and she is doing great. Losing the weight was slow but it came off and has stayed off with no effort on her part. Same with my husband. I know you posted this six weeks ago...so how are you doing now? Kathie

I am thinking on the same side as you. My situation is similar to yours. I had my surgery in June, lost 50lbs and have not lost another pound. It is very frustrating when you are doing everything you are suppose to and don't see the weight come off. I exercise 6 days a week, watch what I eat. drink plenty of water, the whole works and I am not loosing. People keep telling me it is muscle mass, I don't want to hear that I want to loose weight. I am not even loosing inches. I feel just like you do and I would even consider a revision if my doctor would let me. If I don't loose any more weight between now and june that is my one year anniversary I will consider a revision and see what my doctor tells me.  Good luck to you but I do feel your pain.

I am definatley a surgery "failure"...That is the first time I have said that out-loud. I am 4 years out in June and I lost maybe 120 pounds in 24 months. I would say I have kept off 50 lbs. I definatley want a revision. I did everything right....exercise, liquid, food intake. I have had major bowel issues since the beginning and since I am not "thin" I regret having had my surgery. I

I can't believe what I am hearing!  None of you are failures!  Revamp your intakes and you will be fine, I promise!

Best of luck!

Seriously? Revamp your intakes and you will be fine? It's not that easy for everyone, unfortunately. Do you suggest the OP continue eating only 500 or fewer calories every day?

I'm sorry, I don't normally post over here, but this just seemed like a very short-sighted response to a serious problem. RNY surgeries DO sometimes fail people, and it is NOT always only because they don't follow the "rules."
