Post OP 5+ years and beyond.....A question from a newbie!
I think I will post this question in complications as well....so some of you may see this twice....
I have been doing alot of research over the last 4-5 months on WLS. I have had my initial consult with my surgeon and I have one subject I need to obtain more information on.
Complications long after surgery. I have read the OSSG gone bad board, complications, and WLS regret boards. Does anyone have an idea as to how many people are exposed to the various complications long after surgery? such as anemia, dumping, chronic pain, malnutrition, etc?
I have a class on Tuesday night....but would really like to hear from all of you.
I appreciate it.
God Bless.
Jen
Well Jen,
I am not 5 months out..am not a year out but i just switched to a new pcp here in my hometown and he is a doc for other gastric bypass patients and he said the biggie was the vitamins and iron ....... and he also knows what tests to run. I still dump occasionally on fats..i basically avoid all sweets unless they are sugar free. The first time i dumped was at a Christmas party. One of the side affects for me is that my sugar level bottoms out and goes way too low! So I really have to watch out on that especially if I am not feeling good..that is my first indicator that i may drop too low and now i keep glucose tablets. I would do it again!
Hi, Jen. I just had surgery back in Jan and I've often questioned this myself. As with anything else, it is all dependent on yourself and how your body does with the surgery. Unfortunately, there is no magic way of knowing what the future holds. You make the decision and run with it. That is what I did. I have had no complications, no problems. I do not dump, do not vomit and tolerate everything that I eat. I just get full quickly and stop eating at that point. I have had one episode of vomiting, just this past weekend, from spaghetti...but it was my fault. I ate that one or two extra bites when my body said "no more". Learn the hard way!
Best wishes to you on the surgery and the wonderful journey afterwards.

Hi Jen
I just read your post today. I recently read the OSSG gone wrong forum on Yahoo and found the complications really scary. I wonder if perhaps it is due to the type of surgery, the DS as opposed to the RNY.
I am pre op, doing the required insurance diet till fall when my surgery date will be set. I find myself vacillating often even though my primary MD strongly feels I must have the RNY due to my comorbidities of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hypothyroidism, hyerinsulinism(metabolic syndrome) and joint pain due to the excess weight.
I looked for your profile but alas you do not have one. When is your surgery date, do you have one yet? Are you going forward with having it or not? Are you having the RNY?
Would love to hear any thoughts or experiences you have at this point.
Karen
