off to a great start

Get the WLS that YOU want and can live with. If you choose RNY- go for it, but do not let the insurance company make such a life changing decision for you. Since the lapband is not experimental, if the ins co covers on surgery, there's a good chance they have to cover all that are FDA approved.
You will find both RNYs that regret their choice and Lapbanders that regret their choice, so it's best to look at what you can tolerate and live with. BY the way, I've also seen DS's convert to lapband and vice versa.
For example, there is no malabsorption with the band- is that a positive or a negative for you?
Lapband is safely reversible- some feel this is great, while others think it's a way out.
With the lapband, you have to go in for fills and it could take a while before you start losing weight- are you o.k. with that?
Lapbanders lose their weight slower - is that a positive or negative for you?
These are some of the things that should be considered. What may be listed as a benefit for some may not be a benefit to others. Choose the surgery YOU can live with, not your insurance company.
