Topic: Dog and Cat lovers will think this is a hoot... "Where do pets come from"
I have an afghan hound so this really made me chuckle...because it's so true! A newly discovered chapter in the Book of Genesis has provided the answer to "Where do pets come from?" Adam and Eve said, "Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us every day. Now we do not see you any more. We are lonesome here, and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us." And God said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourselves." And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve. And it was a good animal. And God was pleased. And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail. And Adam said, "Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal." And God said, "No problem. Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG." And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved them. And they were comforted. And God was pleased. And Dog was content and wagged his tail After a while, it came to pass that an angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam and Eve have become filled with pride. They strut and preen like pea****s and they believe they are worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught them that they are loved, but perhaps too well." And God said, "No problem! I will create for them two new companions who will be with them and who will see them as they are. These companions will remind them of their limitations, so they will know that they are not always worthy of adoration." And God created the CAT and the AFGHAN HOUND to be a companions to Adam and Eve. And neither the Cat nor the Afghan Hound would obey them unless they wanted to. And when Adam and Eve gazed into the Afghan's and the Cat's eyes, they were reminded that they were not the supreme beings. And Adam and Eve learned humility. And they were greatly improved. And God was pleased. And Dog was happy.... And the Afghan Hound and the Cat didn't give a crap one way or the other." Hope you got a chuckle out of this, too.

Don't plan on the spaying/neutering on calming this down. It never has on any of my dogs. My husband gets a bag of Quickcrete and mixes up some concrete to put in the hole to prevent further digging -- pours it a little low so we can put dirt/grass on top and it's not noticable. For one dog I had, this was our only option b/c that dog never stopped digging. At their age, they are going to want to dig, especially if they are unattended for part of the day.

Hello - I thought I'd post here regarding the little dog we found last Saturday. I suspect someone dropped it off as it appears to be well cared for but was in the back of my son's p/u truck with a collar/no tags. It's too small to jump in it on it's own. It's a male, 22 pounds and mix breed (I think). It's young but appears like it's not going to grow much more (it's feet fit!). It's affectionate and smart. I already have two male dogs and all those males are having issues amongst them. I really need to find a home for this little guy. Photos are at: http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y91/clauskr/Found%20dog/ If anyone recognizes the breed and could tell me, that would be helpful. Thanks.

Here's an important warning for pet owners: Some common food products in your house can be very dangerous to your dog. And I think you're going to be very surprised when you find out what they are. The first warning deals with products made with the sugar substitute xylityol; a natural sweetener found in a number of plants. In this country, it's made from corn stalks. Xylitol is used in a variety of sugar-free products, including gum, mints, ice cream, and all sorts of products made for diabetics. If you or I eat too much xylitol, we might get bloating or gas or diarrhea. When dogs eat xylitol, they can get really sick. "The one case I have seen, it was a dog that had eaten one of those nutrition-type bars that had xylitol in it," says Danielle Wassink, one of the vets at Animal Critical Care & Emergency Services in Seattle. She's seen first-hand what xylitol can do. "When a dog ingests it, it causes a bunch of insulin to be released, so it mimics real sugar, " she explains. "Their body releases a bunch of insulin to go use up the sugar which can then cause them to get very, very hypoglycemic, or have a very low blood sugar." This can cause seizures, tremors, weakness, and collapse. It can also cause liver failure. So the results can be fatal. It can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 12 hours for the dog to get sick, and it can be a few days before the liver failure sets in. So, if you ever suspect your critter has gotten into something containing the sweetener xylitol, call your vet right away. The ASPCA Animals Poison Control Center has seen the number of xylitol-related cases increase dramatically the last few years. In 2004, they handled 70 cases. Last year, the problem more than doubled to 170 cases. So far this year, they figure stands at 114 cases. If the current rate continues it will be another record year. Please repost this tomorrow someone, I will be out of town. I think it is so important to remember and some people do not even know. It is hard to resist sharing our food with our pals and sometimes it can be ok, but no one wants to accidently kill or hurt them. I know I have to be extra careful now about leaving any of my SF food out around the house and such.

I don't think trimming the nails will help, they are wearing them down by digging and vets don't do complete nail declaws on dogs like cats. Try placing landscape timbers along the fence, and sprinkle some tobasco sauce mixed with a little water on the sides. I did this with a yorkie I had to keep her from digging out under the fence. It worked however she was only 7 lbs. They may still dig under the timbers and they may stop. Also, try distracting them with toys, i go to garage sales and pick up stuffed animals for my springers. As long as they have plenty of chews and toys they should be content in the yard. As a last resort, pour a concrete curb around the fence line.

Topic: Puppys are digging!
We got 2 puppies back in May, they're almost 6 months old. We've got an appt to get them spayed at the end of Sept. They're outside dogs. We have a huge fenced in back yard. Our problem is they're digging. Along the fence, everywhere. They're catching moles, I'm not complaining about that, my DH is complaining because of the digging along the fence. They're almost out. I know once they get spayed they should calm down some, but is there anything we can do to keep them from digging so much? Can u trim their toe nails for that? Any suggestions appreciated... Thanks Ange

usually this is just a puppy stage and they get over it when they get older and will recognize it when you say owe, also replace your hands with plenty of choices for him to chew on (play toys) he'll pick his favorite one. Hope this helps , but i wasn't clear if you meant he chews on furniture etc. or you? lisa

i will be thinking of you. I know this is hard for you right now but think of all the good times you two had together, that will help get you through. It's not the length of ones life that matters , but the quality of life, and I am sure that he has had a great life with you for those 11 yrs. lisa
