Want to ride again....
I just rode my horse this weekend for the first time in 4 years. I started with five horses and have sold all but one and I couldn't have had a better time this weekend. I am thankful for the barn that I board at because they use my horse for lessons for small children and it keeps him in shape for me. Don't give up hope you will get back in the saddle again!
I'm just beginning the journey toward WLS. I'm in the waiting stage and hope to have the bypass within the next couple months. Tomorrow is my first appt with the Nut. Since I don't have to wait for insurance, then just getting the "pre stuff" out of the way is what will be timely. I currently have 6 horses. Im overweight too which makes it hard. I have a 4 step mounting block just to get up there. How long did you wait until you rode again after surgery?
Thanks
Jan Morris
BTW, I'm in GA also. Armuchee which is by Rome, NW section of Georgia
Hi Jan,
I waited until march to ride because I had a goal in my head that I wouldn't get on my horse until I was atleast 200lbs because I didn't want to hurt him. I had surgery on 11/09/05. I know where Armuchee is I used to show at the floyd county saddle club and at the armuchee saddle club and also my sisters live in shannon which isn't far from you. Good luck with your journey and keep in touch!
I'm less than a mile from where the Armuchee Saddle Club use to be. Because of lack of support it went bust. Bust everyone usually goes to Berry Saddle Club anyway. It is behind Berry College and has a good amount of members. Shows every 4th Saturday in the month which generates a good amount of participation. But you also have alot of the same folks too. Cartersville has a good saddle club & support also.
We went for our first appt with the nutritionist. She has us on a diet for 4 weeks along with excercise then come back. If we pass this portion, then we get to go to the psy dr and labs. Fun fun. I weighed in at 233 so hopefully I can get some of this off.
Thanks for the response.
BTW, how long did it take for you to actually heal from the surgery? I'd be afraid that after all I'd gone thru, I'd fall or get thrown from a horse and undo something.
Jan
I used to show at the berry saddle club! I haven't up there in a while but I miss it. I bet alot of the same people are still there we used to love going up there and staying the weekend. I guess I probably started feeling really good about a month after surgery I never felt bad but I was just tired right after surgery. I am still learning stuff to this day on things I can tolerate and things I can't. I am over a year and still can't eat a whole half of a sandwich so I think I have done very good. I have gone from 331 down to 170 and I feel great! As far hurting yourself will probably be ok I have 2 toddlers that jump on me constantly and have been fine. Good Luck!
4 months for me , full tilt riding and training , speed events etc. more like 9 months I will say though it was a very strange thing for me the change in balance etc. and although I have 5 horses and have been riding all my life including when I was heavy, it was scary to me to think this weight change had affected my riding , of course you adapt and yes being more likely to dismount and open a gate is probably one of the better things about surgery. Now as this is major part of my job I probably ride a minimum of 4 hours a day , I mean ride, this doesnt count cleaning stalls, grooming etc. I HATE organized type excercise so this is perfect to me. I would say it's pretty tough to be to be too fat to ride the horse mentioned above unless the horse is VERY small or injured. It never stopped me or my horses I competed at my heaviest and won , but I realize some people might not feel comfortable or worry that others might make comments. your horse looks like a halter horse in that picture is he/she?
