I am looking for a woman to share my hotel room with 2 queen beds on Friday and Saturday nights at the conference. The cost for the room is really high for me on my own, but totally manageable with a roommate! Interested?
Topic: RE: What one thing are you planning now that surgery is done?
Hey, everybody, I loved reading your plans! Let me tell you, I am 13 months post-op, have lost 170 pounds and life is WONDERFUL! You will be able to do all those things and more. I don't know what the very best thing is, but the simple things are what give me daily glee: never having to worry if I will fit some place or if the chair will hold me; getting up from a chair without thinking about it and without being in pain; being able to walk very fast; having energy, energy, ENERGY! And it is so delicious to have people tell me how wonderful I look! I still cannot believe it all. 16 pounds to my dr.'s goal for me; 34 to my goal -- I just want to not be overweight for the first time since I was 8 years old! Oh, and I would like to get rid of the "sharpe' puppy" look under my clothes.
This is the best thing I've ever done for myself...you will be so happy!

The reason for wearing the binder is to give you support and to prevent a hernia. You are extremely vulnerable to a hernia right after the surgery - particularly if its open but it can happen even to laproscopic patients. My surgeon has his patients with open surgery wear one for 8 weeks. It wasn't comfortable, but a hernia soon after surgery can cause a heap of trouble and might even require an immediate repair. Also, many people who get a hernia stop losing weight until it is repaired. So, I wore the binder to prevent complications and it worked.
I have a hernia now, but I am a year post-op and it's not such a big deal. I'll be getting the hernia repaired and a tummy tuck at the same time, courtesy of my insurance company.

Topic: RE: Help, please, need a plateau busting diet
At "Curves" I was taught to actually increase my caloric intake for two days, three at the most, then go back to basics: protein, lots of water, low carbs and exercise. Even though I've never been on a real plateau (no weight loss or inches lost for four weeks) this works for me every time it seems things have come to a hault.

Sheila,
It is not uncommmon to get depressed after all these changes going on in your body. All the staff at my surgeon's office (dr., four nurse practititoners and psychologist) encourage patients who are really having a hard time to go on antidepressants for a while. Your body chemistry can get really messed up from general anesthesia and all the body changes and the only thing that will help is medication to bring back the balance. It sounds like you might want to talk to your doc about this if you are depressed on a daily basis.
BTW, 58 pounds at three months is pretty spectacular! Don't get so caught up in the numbers. Everybody loses at different rates. I think the important thing is that we are still losing weight. I'm a little over five months out and have lost 87 pounds. I wanted to be down 100 by now, but realize that it is miraculous that I am still losing weight after five months, and this weight will never come back!

Johnna,
Everybody loses at her own pace! I was losing quickly until the last month or so. When I complained to the nurse practitioner at my surgeon's office she told me that I was way ahead of the normal rate. The key is if you are still losing. Are you eating as directed and are you exercising at all? I find that when I walk more, I lose faster.
Just be grateful that you are healthy and losing weight. I almost died from a pulmonary embolism so I am thrilled to be alive. I feel so much better and have so much more energy than I did before surgery, even though I still have over 100 pounds to lose!
Good Luck!

Topic: RE: Pillow talk to all preops
Did you all know you can buy a "Bari Bear" here on the web site? It's a Teddy Bear but it is also a firm pillow to hold on your tummy, for all the things Kathy mentioned and also for coughing. It works great -- I liked it much better than the pillow the hospital provided. Good luck to all you pre-ops!

Topic: RE: I'm afraid it's not going to work
Karen, I was a total sugar junkie for years before my surgery. Besides all the chocolate, cookies and other stuff I ate during the day, I would eat a pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream every night before I went to bed! I had my surgery September 9 of this year and have not had a problem yet. In this holiday season I have had the occassional piece or maybe two of chocolate, but that's it. I haven't dumped on that small amount but feel confident that I would if I ate a whole lot of it. I have not craved sugar or gone looking for it. I also won't have it in my house. I live alone so that works for me.
I don't know much of anything about the lapband but I've read quite a bit and the RNY has much higher success rates than the lapband. I'll bet I could eat a lot of ice cream with the lapband!!! Since my RNY, food has become pretty much a non-event for me. In fact, because I had some complications and have ot eat a minimum of 100 grams of protein a day, food seems more like medicine that I have to get in me some days. The malabsorption aspect of the RNY is a very effective part of the weight loss.
Now, I will say that I worked very hard in therapy for several years dealing with the issues that I ate over. I thought that when I finished that process, I would magically lose weight. Ha! I tried it on my own again for two years before I finally had the surgery. If you really want this, you will succeed. And even though I spent 33 out of 61 days in the hospital, I am thrilled that I did it.

Topic: RE: It starts with a 2... WOOOO HOOOOO
Congratulations, Claudia! I didn't start out over 400 but I was getting there at 379. I lost 18 before surgery and have lost 67 since surgery (Sept 9, 2003): I too went into the 2's this week at 294 so I am right there with you. People are really noticing and commenting on how great I look (relative to where I started, I look a lot better) and I'm enjoying that, but I'm not sure it's really sinking in with me. I keep asking my friends "can you really tell the difference?" and they are shocked that I would even ask them that. Quite a journey, isn't it?

Topic: RE: PANIC at the 11th hour! (It's LONG, sorry...)
Deb,
You've gotten great advice from everybody so I will just tell you a little of my experience. They put the IV in me in pre-op and I don't remember anything until I was back in my room and my family and friends were there to greet me! I could have been in pre-op for hours for all I knew and I have no memory of post-op. Oh, I do remember them saying to me "OK, it's over. Everything went great" as they were taking me out of the operating room.
Everybody's experience is different. Don't take your husband's experience as yours. Have a great Thanksgiving and an uneventful surgery.

Topic: RE: Back, after seven weeks!
I've been gone so long I didn't recognize the message board! I had my surgery on September 9. On the 20th I was back in the hospital for a week because I had an infection in my wound. Home for three weeks, then back in with a pulmonary embolism and pnemonia -- another 19 day hospital stay. You can read the details in my profile.
Needless to say, there were days when I was sorry I had this surgery, though I am more positive about it today. This time I came home from the hospital feeling strong and well on my way to getting back the good health I had before surgery. It helped to put some clothes on instead of the hospital gown so I had some feedback on my weight loss! 47 pounds since surgery plus 18 before for a total of 65 pounds. Not too shabby for having spent 31 out of 60 days lying in a hospital bed. This is always where my weight loss stops. I am so excited that this time, I will just keep on losing.
I haven't even had the chance to read the message board yet, but will start again. Hope all are well and best wishes to everyone having surgery this week.
