If you are prepared to make the changes and demonstrate that during your pre op requirements, it shouldn't be an issue. if you can't make changes, refuse to make changes, it could be. In my program, during the "behavioral" pre-op requirements, I had to make 3 changes per 2 week period, then sustain them and make 3 more, so on and so on. Some were harder than others. Many programs /insurance also have a pre-op weight loss target to show that you can do it and to shrink your liver before the surgery. Whatever the requirements are, it's really important to meet them to a T.

While you are waiting, you should also call your insurance and understand their requirements. Don't rely on the medical center to get it all right - you have to be your own advocate and the first step is to be educated on all the requirements.

I would like to give you a little advise in order to be successful. Educate yourself on every aspect of this journey! Find out why you've over ate through out the years. When we don't we just have a chance of trading off one addiction for another. While many hate the phrase "Oh you took the easy way out!"!! big damn deal!!! For me it was the easy way out! The surgery its self was easier than the flu. The hardest part was the first few months, I had a stricture and that was it! Now I'm not saying others had it as well. The best thing you can do is hold on to the thought if you don't do something you will DIE!!! Fear is a great motivator! I hope this gives you another prospective. I'll leave you with this. The day I left the hospital I left without any medication even my insulin!

Well, I've hit a little bit of a bump in the road.
The appointment I had with the WLS surgeon on the 25th had to be canceled as that particular clinic is out of network with my insurance, but they didn't tell me until 2 days ago.
I immediately reached out to another clinic and they ARE confirmed to be in network. They explained the steps required by my insurance.
First they requested records from my PCP yesterday. Once those are received, they'll schedule a consultation with their WLS, then I'll have to have a psych eval and a nutrition assessment.
So the process is slowed down a little, but I'm determined to make this happen.
Thank you so much for your reply. I do have a question: If you are not a healthy eater going in and fact is this is all new for you does it jeopardize your surgery. I'm afraid I won't be taken seriously once they find out my typical diet is and I AM going to commit to their routines. I have always loved food though and am nervous
I agree with Kathleen's advice. I was hesitant at first if I should tel anyone at all. However, many years have passed after my surgery and I think telling your children that you are on a new journey to getting healthy and that they will see some changes in your body and how you eat is a good idea. You could even show them some before and after pictures here on ObesityHelp and talk to them about how the surgery works. Also, many surgeons/centers welcome family members to attend a support group or consult session so that family can understand the process, the surgery etc.
Not only will you get great advice and support here, your Weight Loss Surgeon/Center will offer support group meetings for before and after your surgery. I found both vey helpful to me.
Hope you are feeling better soon and good luck with your first WLS appointment.

Welcome! Do you have an idea of what surgery you will want and what the requirements are from insurance? Doing your research now, while waiting to get scheduled, can help with the waiting. My recommendation is to be very clear on what type of pre-post support you can get -- the surgeon is important and you want that go be done perfect but, in my program at least, I spent a lot more time with the RD, the Bari nurse, and the psychologist than the surgeon.
Good luck and ask any questions, we've all been where you are:-)!
