BMI is very flawed as a measure of body fat. But all it requires is a measurement for height and weight. More accurate body fat measurements take time and money, and I don't see our system supporting that.

Hey Sarah!

You have great advice above. But there's a danger that these meds will be available at all under the current political climate.

Yes.

I was seeing a new Dr as mine had retired. My experience was similar to your mother's. I was in for a sore throat. I was given a prescription and told that I'd better weigh ten pounds less the next time I came in. I didn't go back.

Referred January 7/17, Orientation Humber May 28/17, Meet Dr. August 4/17, TRIO November 3/17, Internist November 21/17, Surgeon again December 21/17, Pre-op assessment January 4/18 and Surgery January 12/18.

Just call me "cynical", but I have to wonder if there are not some "$$ to be made" behind this "push", by some "interested" group(s), e.g. health care practitioners, pharm. cos., weight loss product manufs., ins. cos., etc.

Hi everyone,

I recently read Eating Disorders Don?t Discriminate: Stories of Illness, Hope and Recovery from Diverse Voices, which focuses on eating disorders but also touches on weight stigma in healthcare. It got me thinking about how often people face judgment instead of proper medical care because of their weight.

This reminded me of something that happened to my mom. She went to a doctor for routine gynecological tests, but instead of reviewing her file, the doctor barely glanced at it and immediately said, "Your problem is that you're overweight. Don?t come bac****il you?ve lost at least 10 kilos." He dismissed her completely, ignoring the actual reason she was there. She left feeling frustrated and unheard.

I know she?s not the only one who?s experienced this.

Have you ever felt dismissed by a doctor, nurse, or health staff because of your weight?
Have you been given unhelpful advice instead of real medical care?
How did it affect you?emotionally, physically, or in your willingness to seek medical help in the future?

I?d love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Maybe by sharing, we can push for more compassionate and effective care. Feel free to comment or message me privately if you prefer.

This news appears interesting, although note that you have to have subscription to the online New York Times to view the entire article:

Have you been denied insurance coverage for a GLP-1?

Click the link to submit a Public Comment to CMS in Support of Expanding Coverage for Obesity Medications:

https://www.obesityaction.org/action-center/access-issues/CM SPublicCommentJanuary2025

In November, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a Proposed Rule that would expand coverage for obesity medications under Medicare and Medicaid. There is a 60-day public comment period that allows individuals to submit feedback on the Proposed Rule.

Why YOU should submit a Public Comment:

  • Public comments play a crucial role in shaping policy by making voices heard and contributing to meaningful change. OAC advocacy efforts have been instrumental in reaching this significant milestone.
  • Your voice can help ensure access to obesity care for millions of Americans.
  • Medicare and Medicaid coverage policy sets the standard for other insurers, both private and public.

Submit comments on the Proposed Rule by January 27th at 5 PM.

Sounds to me like you're on target if not a bit over. You've lost 30lbs alone in under a month that's pretty darn good. Listen to your doctor, follow the plan and keep yourself focused. The first year is the honeymoon period when you will lose the most weight.

Best of luck to you.

Topic: WL Question

Hello,

So I had SADI on 12/27, I am down 30 lbs. Am I on target with WL or should I have lost more? My surgeon said she doesn't like to put WL goals on her patients bc the point is to be healthy. I feel so much better. I am technically 50lbs down from when I started program. But, I keep hearing from folks that I should be lower (of course people that have never had surgery and just have opinions)
