Thank you for the response - I am sure that my mind is going places it should not! I know it will get better but right now I am worrying about everything!

I think leaks usually show up right away - like within the first day or two after surgery. And as White Dove said, they're very rare.

I was allowed to eat purees as soon as I got home from the hospital - so mushroom soup that had been pureed with an immersion blender would have been fine. So I'm sure you're fine, too.

Thank you so much - I just needed some reassurance and things to lookout for. For some reason I can google all of this but "hearing" it from someone else calms my worries. I really appreciate the response- being only 5 days post-op I still have so many fears and struggles. It is a physical and emotional roller coaster right now.

I don't believe little bits of mushroom will cause a leak. Some surgeons allow solid food right after surgery. Here are symptoms of both surgeries. I am sure you have nothing to worry about. Leaks are very rare.

Symptoms of a sleeve leak include

  • pain in the abdomen that gets worse rather than better
  • swelling in the stomach
  • pain in the left shoulder or chest
  • dizziness
  • fever
  • infection
  • the appearance of sickness.

A leak after gastric bypass:

  • Fast heart rate

  • Fever

  • Chills

  • Stomach pain

  • Chest pain

  • Shortness of breath (rapid breathing or difficulty breathing)

  • Fluid leaking from an incision site

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Pain in the left shoulder area

  • Low blood pressure

  • Less urine

  • General feeling of discomfort (malaise)

I had surgery on Tuesday morning- I just had some cream of mushroom soup that was blended but not strained. I am freaking out because my post op booklet says it should be strained - I didn't even think about it until I was done - my husband blended it with an immersion blender - there were very small bits of mushroom. I have called my surgeon's office but have not received a call back - I am going to completely obsess about this and worry. I am trying to calm down but I can't - how do I know if I have a leak?

Consult a plastic surgeon. Ask your weight loss surgery office to recommend one who works with people with massive weight loss.

Find out the cost and the figure out a plan to pay for the surgery. People might borrow from their retirement plan, get a second mortgage, get a second job, borrow from a family member, or get a loan.

The plastic surgeon's office can give you options. They may be able to get your insurance to cover some or even all of the cost. When I had plastic surgery, I decided that my body was as important as a car.

I make a big loan for a car and pay it off. I was willing to spend what it took to remove the excess skin and feel better about my body.

Work with your doctor to document the medical need. Insurance will consider it cosmetic unless there is a medical record otherwise

You've gotten some good advice here!

Don't get hung up on when you eat, it's really about how much and what; the never eat after X time thing seems to be right up there with starvation mode as things that are disproven/rejected now.

Good for you for starting to walk too! Good luck with finding what works for you.

I'm the same, only hungry in the evenings and can't fall asleep if I'm hungry. What I do is to have a very light snack mid-morning and another mid-afternoon. That way I get some nutrition in to keep me going, but I also save most of my calories for the evening. I'm a big believer in finding out what works for you.
