Topic: How the New Weight Loss Drugs Are Impacting Libido/Intimacy

There was a major article in the New York Times today showing how the new injectibles (e.g. Ozempic) appear to be having a negative effect on sex drive, intimacy, etc. I would reprint it here, but it requires a subscription to the NYT and I don't have one. However, here is one of many articles on that subject that have come out within the past year or so. Strange in that most of the articles report the drugs supposedly adversely impact libido, yet a few studies out there seem to suggest just the opposite. If it turns out the former is the truth, then yet another reason to avoid the injectibles, I would think. :

I think that bipartisan support is ending, I'm afraid.

The results will vary by person just like bariatric surgery. I've seen people with great results and heard others with issues like Amy Shumer. Everyone's cir****tances are different but I lean towards trying reasonable options that can get the weight off, and adjusting when needed. Keeping it off is another issue but first you have to get there.

It's a Doctor thing, not necessarily a weight specific thing. You can get a similar response if they think you drink or smoke too much. I went to have a cyst removed and the nurse told me the doctor could do something about my nose if I was interested. I hadn't asked.

Well, this doesn't sound good .. I didn't know that the injectables work as "anorectics", i.e. suppressing hunger .. That fact alone should make them suspicious in regard to their efficacy (not to mention the safety issues which have since come out ), as we all know those type of drugs usually don't work long term (or even short term for those people who don't "overeat"), and stop working as soon as the patient goes off of them .. I had hoped that somehow they worked in a different, unique manner ..

I've been advocating for improved access to care for obesity treatments since 2013, there has always been bipartisan support for coverage of obesity medications. We keep moving forward with our stories and our ask for obesity to treated like any other chronic disease.

BMI is very flawed as a measure of body fat. But all it requires is a measurement for height and weight. More accurate body fat measurements take time and money, and I don't see our system supporting that.

Hey Sarah!

You have great advice above. But there's a danger that these meds will be available at all under the current political climate.

Yes.

I was seeing a new Dr as mine had retired. My experience was similar to your mother's. I was in for a sore throat. I was given a prescription and told that I'd better weigh ten pounds less the next time I came in. I didn't go back.

Referred January 7/17, Orientation Humber May 28/17, Meet Dr. August 4/17, TRIO November 3/17, Internist November 21/17, Surgeon again December 21/17, Pre-op assessment January 4/18 and Surgery January 12/18.
