Fall Family Fitness Fun

It can be easy with our hectic lifestyles to forget about fitness on a day to day basis. We forget how important it is to stay in shape. Families often forget the importance of bonding in fun ways. One way do that is to work out together and keep fit as a family. There are many creative ways to keep fit as a family, enjoying both indoor and outdoor activities.

The great thing about finding indoor activities to stay in shape is that you don’t have to worry about the temperature. You can go to the pool and splash around. Our family has chicken fights in the water, have swimming races, dive for the torpedoes, play catch with Frisbee and balls, and love playing Marco Polo.? One of the most fun things we like to do is to have “flip? contests off the diving board or side of the pool. Our favorite are the flips the kids do off my back. We go for air, distance, and style. This gives me a great workout – flipping a 10 and 12-year-old!

You can always involve your children when doing yard work – like during the fall when raking the leaves. Now, we’re not just talking about just raking the leaves and putting them into the bags. Who doesn’t love to jump into big piles of them or to be buried in the leaves? I remember burying my toddler’s in the leaves and taking pictures. The kids still love this as they get older. It gives us time to laugh and play together, which is always a good thing.

Fall is also a good time to have a game of football with all the family members while waiting for Thanksgiving dinner to be prepared. Another activity to do with all the cousins that are home for the holidays is to go for a nature walk and to see the animals along the trails. Skipping rocks in the creek somehow always gets everyone involved. One of our favorite things to do is to collect foliage from the trees and bring it back to dry to be pressed between waxed paper to be made into decorations for the fall décor at Grandma’s.

A friend of mine gathers new and gently used blankets and takes them, along with friends and family members, with a brown bag lunch and gives homeless people a blanket and a lunch. That’s how they spend their night before Thanksgiving each year.

Spending time with your family is important. Your family’s health is also important. Family fitness can be done in many different ways and doesn’t have to be in the gym. Get creative this fall and throughout the holiday season. Enjoy your family and get fit at the same time!
