I started my pre op Liquid diet on 8/25/22. My surgery is scheduled for 9/8/22. I am currently staying strong on the diet haven't cheated once and I already lost 17 lbs since I started the diet. My question is if the goal is to shrink the liver by reducing the calorie intake to 800-1000 per day then is it bad to have a healthy snack like egg whites to help with not eating solids? I have been wrestling with it since technically its not " a bad cheat" meal or snack. I usually clock in on calories around 700-800 per day. 2 days before surgery I will need to clear liquids only no more protein shakes. Just trying to survive this last week. I need encouragement.

Hey there!

First off, welcome and congratulations. You're less than a week out from your surgery and it sounds like you're going strong. No small feat.

I can't give you a recommendation on eating something out of your plan. One thing I've learned in the past couple of months is that pre-op and post-op plans can vary dramatically from clinic to clinic. Mine allowed one structured meal per day until a couple of days out. There may be a specific reason why your surgeon wants you on liquids only. It may be worth giving them a call to see if there is flexibility for you.

The pre-op diet is one of the hardest things about going into surgery. Congrats on your loss so far, and on your upcoming surgery. Best wishes, and hope you come back with updates once you make it home!

My pre-op was clear liquids only. No milk or protein shakes. Broth or clear juice, like cranberry sugarfree. The thing about cheating is that it opens the door to more and more cheating. You have a honeymoon after surgery where weight loss can be rapid. Stick to your plan and maximize your loss.
