I am having a panic

I had surgery on Tuesday morning- I just had some cream of mushroom soup that was blended but not strained. I am freaking out because my post op booklet says it should be strained - I didn't even think about it until I was done - my husband blended it with an immersion blender - there were very small bits of mushroom. I have called my surgeon's office but have not received a call back - I am going to completely obsess about this and worry. I am trying to calm down but I can't - how do I know if I have a leak?

I don't believe little bits of mushroom will cause a leak. Some surgeons allow solid food right after surgery. Here are symptoms of both surgeries. I am sure you have nothing to worry about. Leaks are very rare.

Symptoms of a sleeve leak include

  • pain in the abdomen that gets worse rather than better
  • swelling in the stomach
  • pain in the left shoulder or chest
  • dizziness
  • fever
  • infection
  • the appearance of sickness.

A leak after gastric bypass:

  • Fast heart rate

  • Fever

  • Chills

  • Stomach pain

  • Chest pain

  • Shortness of breath (rapid breathing or difficulty breathing)

  • Fluid leaking from an incision site

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Pain in the left shoulder area

  • Low blood pressure

  • Less urine

  • General feeling of discomfort (malaise)

Real life begins where your comfort zone ends

Thank you so much - I just needed some reassurance and things to lookout for. For some reason I can google all of this but "hearing" it from someone else calms my worries. I really appreciate the response- being only 5 days post-op I still have so many fears and struggles. It is a physical and emotional roller coaster right now.

I am glad white dove answered your question. I had a bit of a scare early on but was ok. This place is great about answering questions and you have so many long term patients it is reassuring you can get a valid answer to any question. If I can offer any advice don't over stress about things you are right it is an emotional roller coaster but you will be ok it is one day at a time.

I think leaks usually show up right away - like within the first day or two after surgery. And as White Dove said, they're very rare.

I was allowed to eat purees as soon as I got home from the hospital - so mushroom soup that had been pureed with an immersion blender would have been fine. So I'm sure you're fine, too.

Thank you for the response - I am sure that my mind is going places it should not! I know it will get better but right now I am worrying about everything!

Please be more concerned about getting in your fluids and your proteins as you are prescribed.... i had a different surgery a long time ago.. generally f you have something that will hurt you, you will KNOW it sooner rather than later.

I did everything wrong and even failed 2 drink enough liquids and ended up in the hospital on an IV. But no leak so don't worry you'll b fine .
