Liver issues

I'm in the midst of my journey. Following the medical center's suggestions and going for testing but have had issues with my liver. They now want me to see a specialist. The nurse says this won't prohibit me from surgery but I'm really scared about what these hard/large/fatty liver results mean. Anyone have to consult a liver specialist before surgery?

Fatty and enlarged liver issues are very common in people with morbid obesity. I think they'll check you don't have any other disease and then put you on a liquid diet to lose weight before your surgery.

as Kim said, very common in morbidly obese ppl. As you begin to lose weight , the issue usually resolves itself.

From the bariatric surgeries I see on 600 lb life my takeaway is if Doctor N" doesn't have any room" ie - there's an enlarged liver in the way he will do a sleeve when he was landing a bypass. This seems to happen OFTEN.

Since the initial weight loss with the sleeve is less and the weight loss long term is also somewhat less because there is no malabsorption with that surgery I think of it as Gastric Bypass Lite.

Its ironic that some folks who ideally would get MORE end up with the sleeve because they didn't lose enough weight to reduce their fatty liver size.

I notice Dr N is approving folks for WLS much faster than in the previous years - they lose 50 lbs one month they're approved . Then they more often than not get the sleeve though he plans on a bypass.

Personally I'm GLAD my surgeon ( ten ! years ago - my surgery date isn't correct and I can't change it ) made me lose a TON of weight pre surgery through a rigorous ( mostly ) liquid diet .

Though it was torture existing on basically protein shakes and a very light meal a day for MONTHS ( and strenuously exercising with barely any calories for energy- just burning my own excess fat for food ) I thank God every day for my RNY.

I still have some malabsorption which comes in VERY handy when I'm eating fatty restaurant or catered or holiday food ( or just indulging in truffle cheese and dark chocolate ).

And I did get to goal weight very fast with that head start and have been ( Thank God ) successfully been able to keep the weight off despite quite a few of what I now regard as pretty large mistakes.

Big Hug and Congratulations on getting APPROVED !!! We'll be welcoming you to the loser's bench in no time !

I did my tests and I have a fatty liver, so my doctor is putting me on a special diet since my surgery is in 2 weeks. I will be having a protein shake for breakfast and lunch and then 4oz of lean meat with 2 cups of leafy/green veggies for dinner. He said that this will help my body lose weight from around my liver and allow him to move easier when he is doing my surgery. He put it into perspective that when you lose, you lose around your liver first and when he's performing the surgery, lifting your liver with the laparoscopic tools is like lifting a mattress with chopsticks, so any weight off your liver (and overall) will help long term.

Thanks for a the info. I have a big appointment tomorrow morning and I'm nervous. I think they might give me suggestions on the type of surgery ( I have not decided which procedure I want to get) and loads of other information. Here's to getting some positive news.

I have had issues with liver too, and I have to take some meds for it all the time. I get some for me from Canada Pharmacy, and I also take some supplements from there. I hope they are working and good for me...

Milk Thistle is good to help dissolve fat in the liver. This is a good idea for any one who is obese.
