Had my first consultation!
Well, I did it! I had my first appointment. I was very nervous but it went well. The surgeon was very patient and understanding of all that I spoke about which I appreciated and he answered my many questions. Not judgmental at all and didn't try to rush me to get to another appointment. The staff was friendly and welcoming too and that matters to me. I felt excited and hopeful when I left. I did tell them that I was going for a second consultation with another center and they supported my decision to do so. Whew! I finally am taking some steps forward and I am relieved.
Most surgeons know how to operate. I believe it is their surgical group and staff that make a big difference in how successful a patient is. Are they friendly and helpful? What is their program like? What follow up support do they offer.
My program required extensive preparation. That included exercise classes before and after surgery. We took part in the support groups before and after surgery. People from other weight loss surgery programs are not permitted to join our meetings.
People who do not agree with the rules are dropped from the program. There are weight goals set for every appointment. Surgery is cancelled if a person does not lose the required pre-op weight goal. Therapists are available for people who are not losing enough or who have regain.
The program also works with plastic surgeons who specialize in skin removal for post-ops.
Real life begins where your comfort zone ends
Excellent! I too was delighted at how understanding and non-judgemental my medical team was. They explained to me how your metabolism fights back when you try to lose weight. As a result, I let go of a lot of guilt.
Kudos to you for checking out multiple places. I found that the rest of the medical team is perhaps even more important to your success than the surgeon. So consider that carefully when you make your decision.
