The Supreme Court here in Ireland ruled last week that Subway's bread has too much sugar (10% by weight) to meet the legal standard for bread.

10% SUGAR by WEIGHT ?!!! That means they add 8 and change parts flour to one part sugar in the dry part of mixing ( don't forget they need leavening too ( dry yeast or baking powder or soda) and flavorings ( cheese ... )

I'm SHOCKED and PISSED !!!! NO WONDER everyone's developing diabetes .... and for those of us who have it , we try to eat right and see it get WORSE...

GRRRRRR Makes ME want to riot lol !!

Yeah, pretty infuriating. You would think that a sandwich would be a reasonably healthy choice if you chose the right fillings, but they've doomed you before you get to that stage!

Most bread in the US is sweet - HFCS is a very common ingredient.

I always buy specialist bread because supermarket bread is so ?. I hate it!

One of the first thing I eat when I get back to the UK is crusty bread.

I don't have bread very often, but I find that some of the "low GI" breads, at least the ones here in Ireland, have a lot of protein and flavour for relatively few calories.

I never even thought about the bread having sugar in it. Although I know that almost everything we buy has sugar or HFCS. High fructose corn syrup was invented in Japan. I believe it was their revenge on us for dropping the atomic bomb.

Thanks for the tip, I will be reading labels more carefully.

That's head spinning! What a reminder to do some research before ordering foods.

I saw this and was astonished. Thankfully, I try and to the salads more but it stinks that we can't get some of the discounted pricing ($5.00 foot long) and am charged $6-7 for a salad. Might as well get the foot long and then just roll the meat and veggies up.

I often wrap "sandwich-y fixings" in lettuce or cabbage leaves. I don't have bread very often, but when I do, I want it to be something really special. Much of the time you don't really taste the bread in a sandwich anyway; it's mainly there just to hold the fillings.
