Fascinating -- is it the same cholesterol or just unfortunate common name?

Something I never thought about. So I looked it up, suspecting that it was just lanolin which comes from sheep, but I see that cholesterol was an ingredient. I am guessing it is also from sheep, but don't really know. It is still sold, but you would have to go to a beauty supply company. It is a very good product and not very expensive.

Pregnancy interrupts the loss of hair which is why most women are positively lustrous while expectant.

Once they give birth the loss resumes with gusto, which is when women generally panic over "heavy hair loss" which is really not what it is.

I have never had children and didn't know this!

I never really thought about that before, but the hair always was much nicer when they were pregnant.

Another weird thing we used to see with surgery years ago would be a woman would have a fresh permanent and come back a few weeks after coming home from the hospital and the hair would be almost straight. That was a mystery I never figured out.

I got to the point where I would tell them to wait until after their operation to have a permanent. Back then almost everyone had a perm or some kind.

Thank you! I am sure learning a lot and I am so glad that I posted! You triggered a memory for me! When I was younger, I used the Cholesterol product and it was great. I don't think I have seen it in the stores for years but then again, I haven't been looking for it.

Also, if it's any consolation, my understanding is that the hair doesn't fall out until new hair starts growing, which is why you don't see the problem until a few months after surgery. In other words, by the time you see the hair loss, the problem is probably already solved. You just have to wait for the new hair to grow.

It is a consolation! I am feeling much less stressed about the hair loss now with your post and others. Thank you!

I actually started using Nioxin several months before I had my surgery and it seemed to help. I had about 8-9 months of hair loss that started about 3 months post-op.

Not sure how often you wash your hair. I figured out that I simply had to stop washing my hair every day (of course unless I go swimming or work out or get sweaty). I also use a shampoo/conditioner for dry hair.

Thank you Janet for sharing your experience. I wash my hair every other day. I have long hair and washing it every day as I got older became just too much. Especially since my hair is thin and tangles so easy! I wish I had heard about Nioxin before my surgery and knew enough to try it as a pre-op.
