foods i can no longer tolerate-temporary or permanent?
i have a question for you all who have been post-op for several yrs. i am 8 months post op and my taste buds have changed. i used to eat alot of pizza, bbq, fried foods, full fat ice cream and yes red meat but now red meat makes me sick. so does sugar. where i live there is a bbq restaurant on the ground floor that i used to eat at alot, now i just smell the stuff and i want to gag! i crave the healthy stuff, baked fish and chicken, fresh and frozen veggies and fruit, stuff like that. my big question is this- is this a temporary thing or a permanent thing? did the surgery which i hope it did totally change my taste forever? i talked to my surgeons nurse and she said everyone is different. any thoughts or comments about this would be greatly appreciate. thanks
the only things I really can't tolerate any more are fried things and anything that has a ton of sugar. I can eat something like a small cookie or a little bit of ice cream, but if I ate a lot of it, I'd pay for it later.
also, I learned a couple of months ago that I can no longer tolerate Reuben sandwiches, which I used to love (it was the first time I'd had once since I had WLS four years ago). Not sure if it was all the fat or else the acid in the sauerkraut, but I got REALLY sick.
I don't know the medical reason, but sugar is like Kryptonite to most of us. Ice Cream sent me over the edge so bad one time, I could barely walk. Now I am almost scared to touch it.
For me its anything with red sauce:Spaghetti, Lasagna etc..I think the acid in it makes it intolerable
Fried foods I can eat but just so little of it it's not worth it. I get filled up too fast. I use to eat fast food a lot, now I eat it 3x a year maybe and that's only on vacation or when traveling (Whataburger is like a treat for our family since one is not close)
Besides that, everything else is pretty normal now

I have had a few be temporary and some that seem to be permanent... I can't stand fast food of almost any kind, 99% of pasta makes me ill, too much sugar feels like I'm going to die, beans of all kind, and last about 90% of fried food makes me gag. I'm 2.5 years and I hope that it's permanent! Some of the temporary stuff was tuna, apples, red meat, BBQ (still can't do sauce on it!), and ice cream.
Good luck!

your comments do help me alot. thanks! i used to eat big bags of trail mix and a couple of months ago i tried 2 TBS and got very sick! i live in a small town and don't know of anyone who had the surgery. i do feel alone alot. there are so many changes that happen after weight loss surgery stuff that my surgeon never told me about. the only thing i can eat when i eat out that won't make me sick is Subway salads with meat and lite dressing. there are days when nothing even sounds good.
