Also see if you can be temporarily assigned to a job that does not require lifting. Many employers will work with you on something like this.

If your after surgery care is considered a disability then under the Americans with disabilities act you can ask for a reasonable accommodation to your job and they have to comply. So if you cannot lift 30 pounds for say a period of 4 to 6 weeks then under the reasonable accommodation they have to provide for that part of your disability. If there is a Center for Independent living in your community they can help you determine if this is truly a disability and qualifies for a reasonable accommodation.
