Su****5 months post op?

Hi all! I'm currently only 3 weeks post-op, from an RNY but I've been offered a truly amazing gift of an all expenses paid trip to Japan in late November (which will have me at 7.5 months post op).

I've always been a huge fan of sushi and am wondering how people find sushi post op? I understand sashimi (just the raw fish) is fine, but I'm curious about sushi (ie, rice with slice on top) and maki (rolls).

Also, what about things like udon noodles? Or other stereotypical Japanese food?

I just want to set my expectations for what to expect food wise while traveling!

I eat Sushi regularly now at a little shy of 2.5 years out. I picked mostly riceless rolls until recently because the rice would fill me up so quickly I could only eat a couple of pieces. I can now eat about 5-6 standard Sushi pieces comfortably. Some people really have pain related to rice, FYI so I wouldn't make that your first time trying a bite of it. Some of the riceless rolls with cucumber wrap are really good.

I am diabetic so I don't eat a lot of noodles (or rice for that matter outside of Sushi!), but they don't bother my sleeve. They may have at only 7.5 months out. I didn't really eat any of this until I was after goal.

My husband and I are both coming up on 16 years PO RNY. We eat sushi on a regular basis but we shy away from the rice because of it filling us up real fast. I sometimes cannot even tolerate fried rice or white rice. I try to keep my consumption to a couple of tablespoons. I can eat a little bit more of cooked brown rice. I have never had Udon noodles so I cannot help you there.

When your doctor gives you the okay to eat su****hen first try it at home before you travel abroad. There is nothing worse than getting sick or having a food disagree with you when you are far, far from home.

Edited to add:

To clarify we eat the sushi with rice but will have it with Nori wrap instead of rice on the outside of the roll. There is less rice than say a California roll.

I also eat sushi occasionally (almost four years out). I can eat it the kind with rice, but not a ton of it. I still don't eat noodles, so not sure how I'd react to them.

I'm five years post-op and I can eat an entire small roll (like just a tuna roll) as a meal. If it's some huge special roll, I can eat around 4 pieces of it for a meal.

It has made sushi a lot cheaper :)

I would stay away from carb-heavy traditional food. Noodles, takoyaki, okonomoyaki, katsu and tempura, that sort of thing. But! The great news is that "traditional" Japanese meals (as I understand them) are pretty bariatric-friendly. You'll often see the "ichijyu sansai" principle, which is basically one soup, three veggie dishes, rice, and fish. Skip the rice and you're pretty much good to go!

For local specialties off the top of my head, I'd suggest yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), sukiyaki (meat in broth), yakiniku (Japanese BBQ), and kitsune (fried tofu). Miso is also a great choice and you can often find it served with large bits of mushroom and/or tofu!

How far out from surgery were you guys when you first had sushi? I always loved sushi before surgery and can't wait to eat it again! I'm only 3 months and some change out from surgery. Wondering if it would be ok to eat it now? I'm assuming it would be ok since I'm on regular solid foods, but just wanted some input!

This is an easy-is one for me to remember since my birthday and surgery days were close. I'm pretty sure I waited to have real sushi, with rice, for my birthday. So a year post-op. Before that I got other things like tuna tataki. Yum.

I think I was about 3 months out when I had sashimi for the first time. I asked the sushi chef if he could do nigiri, but on top of a bed of cucumber sticks instead of rice, and it came out really well!
