Hello, a few questions...
on 1/21/19 5:01 pm - Amarillo, TX
I had VSG in March of 18. Due to a couple of things, mostly myself, I've not lost weight like I thought I would.
I had a pretty bad, to me, leg injury in September. After trips to urgent care and ythe Er all I knew it wasn't a blood clot. One told me a varicose vain the other sciatica...which I had been dealing with since 15. The pain is mostly gone but the back of my leg from the hip down is still numb.
Around august or so so I had to switch psychiatrist because my old one left the practice. The pharmacy screwed up my abilify and cut the dose in half. The clinic wouldn't change it until I could see the new person...2 1/2 months later. I am now adjusting to rexulti.
then the acid stuff started around July. I'll be the first to admit I haven't eaten like I should. I'm hungry all the freakin time. I don't eat a ton but apparently more than I should. The deep hole of depression and bi-polar disorder has been hell. I've been having many raw throat episodes. There is a constant burn in my belly. I have chronic constipation. My stomach is so loud that my mom can hear it in another room. I take protonex daily. I'm literally hungry all the dang time.
I'm calling first thing in the morning to see if I can get into my surgeon's office. I've let the way people treat me determine how I think I should be treated. That's ended. Now i'm mad. I'm mad at myself. Mad at the medical system. Just mad! I've been doing really bland stuff and mostly full liquids for a few days. My stomach still burns and my mom, a former nurse, thinks I have an ulcer.
has anyone experienced similar situations with the acid? It's to the point I can't even use pepper...it just burns.
I'm sorry you've had such a bad time. Revisions to RNY seem pretty common now, and it's the only real cure for gerd after VSG, so be prepared that it may be in your future!
Acid also mimics hunger, which probably explains that extreme symptom too.
I'm glad you're not taking crap any more - be your own best advocate - none will ever care more for you than you should. Go get 'em and get this dealt with!!!

I am so sorry you are dealing with the pain and discomfort. GERD can result in getting ulcers. Hopefully it is only an irritation, and not an ulcer.
GERD sometimes happenes as a results of food allergies - intolerances. Even before WLS - some foods I ate would cause a severe and lasting burn. The only way to prevent that was to avoid food like that.
Post op RNY - I thought I wouldn't have to deal with GERD. But unfortunately I do. My docs don't know why I have it, and how to fix it except Rx strong PPI.
Plus avoiding foods I am allergic to - have intolerances to.
I am glad you see a doc, they may order a scope, or they may just put you on meds and hope this helps.
Long term - I would try to see an allergist to determine if there are foods you need to avoid. Unfortunately for me - dairy proteins,- like whey, caseine, etc. cause a very strong allergic reaction in me, so I have to avoid that. Plus soy, corn, etc. I know I have intolerances to most grains and beans. (Intolerances - my alergies test came back negative, but I have a reaction after I eat some of the foods, or additives).
Plus - when I get constipated - my GERD is close to imposible to control. To prevent constipation I take daily dose of miralax, and I take magnesium. Taking magnesium not only helps with our bones and muscles, but also helps me deal with constipation.

I am sorry that you've had a tough go of it -- and I sincerely hope that your recovery from the blood clot, adjustment of your meds and acid issues are resolved quickly.
I just want to reiterate what the other two posters have said: acid mimics hunger.
Getting that under control may help a great deal -- and as Kim mentioned, sometimes after VSG, the GERD is bad enough that revision to RNY is indicated.

You may want to talk to your doctor about taking a different PPI if Protonix is not providing adequate relief. You should also review the instructions on how/when to take your GERD medication for proper absorption. Make sure to confirm what may interfere with it (e.g. vitamins, RXs, food), avoid those things, and find out if you should take it before or after eating.
