MAOI

I've been reading but this is my first post. I'm very new to the process but eager to move forward. I have my second appointment tomorrow and I'm very nervous. My biggest concern is that I take an MAOI medication (Parnate) and I have no idea if that's compatible with surgery. I can't find any info on it (it's very rare).

Anyone have any info or a good resource? I cannot find anything!

I didn't take that medication but may I suggest when it comes to meds go by what your doctor/surgeons advise. What worked for one person may not for you. It depends on your medical history and other meds you may be taking. Welcome to OH, we are here to help Keep us posted on how it goes and if you need anything from us.

Kathy

I take an SNRI and there was no problem with compatibility. Like Kim and Kathy mentioned, talk with your surgeon at your appointment and get your pharmacists opinion, mine was really helpful.

I second the recommendation of a pharmacist. While the doc knows what to prescribe for an ailment, the pharmacist has a keen understanding of how the drug is absorbed and how it affects the body. If you are getting VSG, there shouldn't be much of a change, but if you are having a procedure that alters absorption like RNY or DS. then you want to know what your common channel will be so the pharmacist can compare that to how (and where) the medicine is designed to break down in the body.

Some who take slow-release meds do better with larger doses, or half portions of the same dose. While the pharmacist can give you the first educated answer, the next step is to be prepared to pay attention to the effects, watching for variances and maybe some additional bloodwork if needed so you can adjust as necessary.
