Aritficial Sweetener Gives me MASSIVE migraines - help!

I am nearing my time to finally discuss the surgery date, so the protein shakes are a reality. They all have artificial sweetener and - no lie - one sip and I have an instant migraine. Does anyone have any alternatives they can share? I CANNOT drink or eat artificial sweeteners - Thanks!

If you can't drink any sweeteners, including stevia, monk's fruit, ect. then you might just have to go with the unflavored brands of whey protein powders. I used Isopure and Orgain brands during my initial post op time.

I was in the same boat, one sip of artificial sweetener, I'm out for a week. It was what I had the most anxiety about pre-op, but the great people on this forum pointed out the above mentioned unflavored protein options.

I personally used liquid egg whites (pasteurized of course) as my protein supplement. I also used pure whey protein isolate with no additives, as well as powdered egg whites. Unfortunately you will just have to do a little more work with the unflavored options, no grab and go premier protein for me. I always add a little cinnamon to give it a little flavor.. they are not sweet.. but they get the job done. As you progress along your diet plan you can get creative with the flavorings, just no high-sugar items.

Besides the unflavored their a few chicken soup flavored ones. I know Unjury has one and not sure who else. I haven't tried personally.

I have had Unjury chicken soup. It's a little bland, but I guess bland is a GOOD thing, for early post ops :)

Bone broth may be a reasonable alternative, and there may be some body building brands that are full sugar, but an inspection of each label to see what is causing it. You may be okay with sorbitol but no not sucralose. There will be a bit of experimentation. This will motivate you to eat strategically, that's for sure, so you don't have to depend on protein drinks at all.

I have this issue as well... but Stevia/erythritol/malitol/xylitol work ok for me. But sucralose/aspartame/ace-K all trigger instant migraines... do all sweeteners cause this for you?

I use unflavoured protein and add flavours back in... I am fortunate that many of the powdered proteins here are starting to be sweetened with Stevia which helps immensely and gives me variety.

Have fun,
