GI Bleed 14 yrs after RNY
Sunday 9/16/18
I went to the ER on Thursday with shortness of breath and dizziness. My HH blood were great the previous week (I have blood checked every 6 weeks) so I didn't think anemia I assumed it was my heart (three heart surgeries since the RNY).
They admitted me and said I had a another bleed. My hemoglobin was 10 when I came in and 9 later that night. By morning it was 8 so they gave me a blood transfusion. Had a upper GI showing nothing so they planned on releasing me because my blood went to 10 but in a few hours it was 9 so they kept me. Having a colonoscopy in the morning. I doubt they will find anything.
I have had these mysterious bleeds ever since RNY.
Just sharing a warning: If you have odd symptoms and feel funny get checked out. Bleeds can fast and can be fatal. My daughter died a week after gastric bypass from a bleed five years ago.
A hemoglobin of 10 doesn't seem that low to most people but it triggers my heart to throw PVCs so I have my levels checked every 6 weeks. I've had over a dozen blood transfusions and about 30 iron infusions.
I regret having this surgery every day,
- My daughter died from gastric by pass sleeve - bleed to death a week after surgery.
- My sister died two years ago after gastric by pass (she didn't follow eating instructions, ate too much, vomited in her sleep and aspirated a month after.
- My health has been in the toilet for 14 years.
I'd advise anyone considering it to try the Keto diet. After a rough week giving up sugar, gluten, and processed foods--you have zero hunger its a real life changer--without destroying your body.

Did they say your GI bleed is directly caused by your surgery 14 years ago? That's a long time.
I also know someone who died from having the gastric bypass. It's sad, but it can happen. I also know she died because she refused to take any vitamins, would rather eat eat eat until she threw everything up every single meal, and basically killed herself because she refused to do the things she was told she needed to do forever.
I'm sorry your health has suffered over these years, and I really hope you can get it back on track and these bleeds under control.

did you have trouble with anemia before your bypass.
Some ppl are genetically pre disposed to have anemia no matter what they do.
It seems like this was a problem for the OP pre-op as well -- http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/amos/389646/They-are-cance ling-my-surgery/#3064517

This absolutely shows how important it is to listen to your doctor. When a doctor says "let's hold off, your anemia could be a serious problem," they're not doing it just to be annoying-- it's because they're concerned for your health.

I'm very sorry to hear of your troubles.
Many people here have done keto or low-carb diets, failed them, and still proceeded with surgery. In the big picture, surgery is safe and more effective than keto, but we all should go into it understanding the risks.

Hi there.
I went through and read all of your previous posts in this forum yesterday and they definitely give the impression that a) you knew about your issues prior to RNY and b) you talked your surgeon into doing RNY and ignoring those issues.
Post-op, you proceeded to eat whatever you wanted, including frequent carbs. You didn't stay on top of vitamins or other recommendations for health. You often failed to follow up with specialists, especially after you moved.
I'm sorry that you've had these problems but it seems like they're completely unrelated to RNY and I hope that your post doesn't unnecessarily scare anyone.

This is really awesome. Pre-op folks are already scared. I would have been scared ****less if I saw this prior to surgery. I'm not real big on calling people out, but sometimes it is necessary.
To the OP. Very sorry for the loss of your sis, and daughter. How absolutely tragic. I hope you get the answers that you are looking for regarding your health. You should definitely see a hematologist.
