Late period

Yes! I used to have absolutely debilitating cramps and very heavy flow every month. With the iud, I have zero periods, so no cramps!

Plus, when I decided that I was ready for pregnancy, one year after surgery, I was pregnant three weeks after having it removed.

Do you have a Progestin IUD (Mirena, Skyla or Liletta) or the Copper IUD (ParaGard)? I have been on Depo for many years and am considering changing to an IUD.

I have a Mirena. My gyno said the copper ones don't help with cramps as much, if at all, so I opted for the hormonal one.

I absolutely love it! I had one placed before WLS, and another one after I gave birth to my son. The insertion left me crampy for a couple of days, but I've had zero side effects since, and I love the lack of periods. Highly recommend!

I've used non-hormonal IUDs for YEARS and love them! No weight gain, acne, mood swings, clot risks, or any of the other bad side effects from hormonal birth control. They also haven't caused an increase in cramps for me either.

Do you still get your period? I haven't had one in so many years and it's not something I want to restart unless I decide to have children.

It's not uncommon to have menstrual irregularities after a large weight loss. Hormones are stored in fat cells so a large loss of weight can cause havoc with your periods. Many previously infertile women who didn't bother with birth control after WLS have found themselves with an unexpected surprise in the first year after surgery. That is why many surgeons insist that women use two forms of birth control after WLS, even if they were unable to conceive for many years before surgery.
