Dumping?
Hi guys, I am 18 1/2 years out of RNY gastric bypass and I have gained 30 pounds in the last 5 years out of the 130 pounds I lost. I have recently gone back to the basics and I think I am experiencing dumping with premier protein. I can handle yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese, and everything but milk and ice cream. I haven't had dumping in years. I do have hypoglycemia attacks if I eat too many carbs. So, I started premier protein over the last two days and I am having what I think is dumping. Can anyone remind me of symptoms and let me know if they do that? Thank you!
Well- what is it that you're experiencing, and how far off from when you drink it do you experience it?
My instinct leans to no- it's not dumping. When I hear people say they dump in response to a single item, that contains neither sugar nor dairy-- I think it's just something that disagrees with you, not dumping.
I'm not an expert in it- but I believe Dumping is intense, cramping, diarrhea, sweats, etc and would occur within 30 minutes of ingesting X.
5'6.5" High weight:337 Lowest weight:193/31 BMI: Goal: 195-205/31-32 BMI
It does happen within 30 minutes of eating. I had diarrhea and nausea which lasted about an hour to an hour and a half. No cramping. I still have hypoglycemic attacks if I eat too many carbs even this far out. I did exactly what my surgeon said to do up until 5 years ago when my Mom passed away and I slowly lost sight of my surgery. I have gone back to the basics now the last few days, eating like my surgeon told me to right after surgery and I already can tell a difference in how my pouch feels. Even though I lost sight of my surgery and gained 30 pounds, I could still only eat about 8 oz of food if it's protein and healthy carbs. Problem was I started eating too many carbs and drinking alcohol. It stops now and I'm once again listening too my surgeon. Thanks for your reply! I do appreciate your input. if you can't handle milk and ice cream, I don't imagine you can handle premier protein either, which is milk based.

Dumping feels like you are having a heart attack. Your heart races, you sweat profusely, you might get nausea and diarrhea, but not always. It is REALLY bad.... like you feel like you are about to die and should be going to the ER...yes... it's that bad. They say if you have to ask if your dumping, you are probably not dumping. LOL!
It sounds like you're lactose intolerant. Check the label of the protein. If it contains whey concentrate it has lactose in it. Find a protein that is whey isolate only. Whey isolate is 99% lactose free. If you use powder mix it with almond milk or cashew milk. I'm lactose intolerant too. Anything with lactose in it sends me right to the bathroom.
My surgeon told me that I will be eating protein drinks and eating a high protein diet the rest of my life. Also, they are great for working out for exercise when you need to increase protein. They aren't just for brand new weight loss surgery patient's. I signed a contract with my surgeon that I will continue to follow the rules forever. Protein drinks aren't supposed to be the main source of protein, only supplemental at my stage but I still have to eat a diet really high in protein and low in carbs. I have decided to get back to the basics just like I was brand new. Only not as long of a stretch. In only three days, I can tell a difference in my pouch. Doesn't feel nearly as irritated and I can once again feel the tightness. It was only 5 years ago that I started gaining weight after my Mom passed away. Since then, I tried everything to loose it except for utilizing my wonderful little tool. Hence, I'm back at this sight, got out my doctor's instructions and off I go. Thank you for your input. How far out are you?

I am not as far out, coming on five years. I have had reactive hypoglycemic attacks -- not too many, as I am pretty careful about my intake and my blood sugar runs low anyhow.
I am not lactose intolerant.
The first thing I thought of when reading your post was lactose intolerance, but the fact that you can handle all those other dairy sources nixes that.
I agree that protein shakes are not the best way to lose regain -- dense protein is the way to go for many reasons. I haven't dealt with re-gain yet -- however, I often use the Premier Protein shakes because otherwise I do not eat enough because I am running all day.
I use them as a meal replacement -- usually at breakfast, or when I haven't met my protein needs during the day, in the evening. I don't know why, but the caramel flavor has given me a serious RH episode twice now. Both times I have fallen down in the 30-40 range -- leaving me feeling as though I am going to die.
I also have no problems with dairy -- so I am not sure why that particular flavor has had this effect on me. I have questioned if it is because I had done something differently before ingesting it each time -- and, notably, both times have been in the evening. However, other flavors haven't bothered me at the same time at all. I am so scared of it happening again, that I gave the rest of my box of caramel away to my MIL.
Just curious -- is it only one flavor that has caused this effect for you?
Edited to add: I mis-read your original posting. If you cannot handle milk or ice-cream (which I can't even imagine ingesting) -- I would absolutely assume that it is a lactose intolerance and a reaction to the whey.
