Drug testing Post op
Hello I am 15 years post op and very happy!! My daughter had surgery last January. She has turned to illegal drugs and I have her children now! She was ordered a hair follicle test and is refusing saying that because of the gastric, drugs stay in her fat cells for up to two years. I am not sure where I can find out this info, but don't think she has any fat cells left, she was 423 before surgery and now barely weighs 110. Any help or guidance would be so appreciated. Thank you all!! Crazy granny
If she is refusing a hair follicle test then she is still using. Who ever is asking for the test could contact her surgeon and ask them, but I have a feeling your daughter wouldn't like that.
Usually when a hair follicle test is asked for then they want to see when the last time someone used a drug was. Marijuana stays in your system the longest up to 30 days if going for blood or urine tests, with hair follicles it can be detected up to 9 months.
I don't know about many of the other drugs, but THC which is the "high" in marijuana does attach to fat cells. So if you're 300lbs and smoke weed every day you would probably have to quit for at least month or more to be clean, but someone 150lbs may very well be clean in couple of weeks just because they don't have as many fat cells.

nothing stays on our system for two years.
Especially with a surgery that is malabsorption of medication/ vitamins for life.
I agree she is still using.
A previous poster made a good point with the malabsorption, but additionally, the surgery did not change her fat cells, certainly not in her head.
I agree that her surgeon can be contacted directly and asked these questions if there is any uncertainly that the hair follicle test would be fair and accurate, but that isn't the issue. She is still using. Period.

what do fat cells have to do with it? Drugs/ bits are not stored on fat cells.
I was thinking that as well, but I wasn't totally sure, so I didn't say anything just in case I was wrong. To be honest, I have no idea how OP's daughter came up with any of that "information"...like I don't see how she made the connection from RNY to drugs in system longer. It's like going from point A to cucumber.

I wish you all the luck, honestly. I know what this ordeal is like. Drug use is so horrible. Stay strong!
THC from marijuana is stored in the bodies fat cells, but not much longer than 30days. Unless the person continues to use. THC storage
I would venture to guess the OP's daughter knows this and is trying to say that because she had WLS it will somehow stay in her system longer. Which is really the opposite. With less fat cells the THC moves through the system quicker once the person quits smoking. But hair follicle tests are like rings in a tree. There is evidence of the drug in the hair that can go back quite a bit. Even if she is clean for a month the hair test will show around the last time she used.
