Any Tips/Advice for Flying While Obese?
Since you're getting two seats, you probably don't need this information, but for anyone who happens across this thread:
Last time I flew, I wasn't sure if I'd be able to fit in the seat or not. I found this useful comparison of seat width and distance between seats by airplane and airline. https://www.seatguru.com/charts/generalcharts.php
Unfortunately, I haven't found a similar chart on aisle width. But you can try googling the particular plane you will be on and the airline you're flying. You may find information about whether the aisles are wider or narrower than most.
The worst part of the last few trips I took wasn't being on the plane. It was how exhausted I was after walking long distances in the airport or sitting in uncomfortable chairs in the lounge. Birmingham (UK) airport, I'm looking at you!
Lots of good advice here. I don't have much more except plan for need of airplane bathroom visits, If the person in front of you reclines their seat, don't be afraid to ask the attendant to say something. My DH was really large and the person in front reclined right into his belly! Attendant politely asked the guy to not do so.
Two seats will be great. Check your bag so you don't have to haul a bunch of junk into the cabin. Don't get a bulkhead seat as they make you put ALL your stuff in the overhead so its hard to get at even your purse.
Arrive early and try to get one of those golf carts to give you a ride and be prepared to tip the person. And I bet they would let you board early like they do people with little kids and the elderly. At many airports you can check your bag curbside.
Enjoy the trip and don't let people bug you. ds
Having flown hundreds of times while 6'4" and almost 500 pounds I can definitely relate to the anxiety that flying causes. You've gotten lots of great advice from folks on here. I bought a seat belt extender years ago and it has been one of the best purchases I've ever made. Early boarding is also very helpful.
First and foremost, as other have said, you deserve to be on that plane as much as anybody else. Also, you will NOT be the only obese person on the flight. I just got back from a cross country trip and spent many hours in the airport seeing lots of folks with obesity.
The best advice I can give is that life is hard enough. Don't let this add to it. You'll get through it ok. Relax and look at it as one of life's adventures.
Good luck. We're all pulling for you.
