Protein Question
Someone at work gave me a tub of Casein protein. I always have used Whey protein and I did look up the difference online and doesn't seem too different. Just looks like your body takes them in differently. Anyone use this? Should I just throw it out or use it up?
Whey is the best-absorbed protein, but it's not something I'd worry about when I'm not newly post-op. I use Quest protein powder regularly and it's part whey and part casein. You can get plenty of protein from solid food and probably eat like a 'normal' person. I would not suggest a strict casein protein for someone who was on a liquid diet.
I'm only 18 months out from surgery and I use protein powder because it tastes good as a treat, not for nutrition.

I only use protein powder or shake once a day just with my coffee for breakfast. Maybe I will switch it up everyday and do whey one day and casein the other so it doesn't go to waste. Thank you!
Honestly, it really doesn't matter. You are like any normal person who didn't have WLS now. Unless you are avoiding meat/dairy, etc you will get plenty of protein from your daily diet. I get 120-150g of protein from food at this point simply by eating protein forward.

Can I ask how you get that much protein? I'm very early out and struggle to get to 70g and definitely could not do it without at least a shake a day (just a lot of restriction, which is a good thing). I've tried, and at just 3oz or less of lean protein at a time, can't get there. Have you found, 18-months out, that you are able to eat a larger volume? Or have you found the right balance of proteins?

I'm in maintenance and eat about 1,800 calories per day. I am able to eat 4oz of dense protein, plus some veggies in one sitting. Yes, you're sleeve/pouch will mature and you will be able to eat more. For the first several months I could eat 1-1.5oz of protein per meal and I didn't eat veggies for 5 months. It seems unfathomable, but it happens.

At your stage, if you like it, use it. For someone in the first 6 months or year after surgery, I would stick with 100 percent whey isolate.
There are different kinds and qualities of protein. Some are incomplete, such as collagen, and should be completely avoided. There are just too many complete choices to go with, that something deficient is just a bad idea.
Then there is the PDCAAS, protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score, which quantifies a protein's quality AND how well a human body is able to utilize it. Whey, casein, eggs, all score a perfect 1. Beef is a .92. Beans are .74. Wheat protein is a .42. Collagen is a 0.
Then, there is also how quickly protein gets absorbed. Whey is very quick. Casein is more of a timed, gradual release. Egg protein powder has it's own absorption rates. Some bodybuilders try to finesse mixes of powders to create a different absorption rate. Unless they are in world class competitions, it's just over thinking things.
It's good quality. If you like the taste, enjoy.
