It really depends on the surgeon and even more so the insurance. Mine took about 3 months in total by the time I saw the surgeon and by the time I was going into surgery.
I could have had it about three months after I started in the program, but I worked in education so I had to wait six months (I started my program in January and had surgery in june). However, my insurance required a six-month supervised diet before approving me. I already had that out of the way before I started the program at the bariatric clinic, but if I hadn't, I wouldn't have been eligible until after I finished that (although in my case, I had to wait until June anyway because of work, so it wouldn't have mattered..). It will probably depend a lot on your doctor and how many things you have to go through before approval (I had to have a sleep study, a nuclear stress test, and a couple of other things)
If you are self-pay I have seen people get surgery within 2 weeks. If you are using insurance it can take six months to a year. If you have chosen your surgeon, your best bet would be to ask the person in his office in charge of insurance for an estimate.

For me, 18 months from the first seminar I went to. The first delay was that I was like .2lbs to light to have a BMI that my insurance would accept without a comirbidity. After that, a journey of finding/getting a sleep study. But then I gained weight anyway, so qualified without a comorbidity. After that: life events! I had to take a 6 month program, plus run around getting clearances (cardiac, general, psych), had to get an EGD (which was delayed a month because I came down with strep the day of the procedure!). But my story is atypical. At the initial seminar, they said 6 months was average.
