I'm back and i am an alcoholic
Thank you for sharing.
I used to drink socially before RNY, had a lot of alcohol at home, and a bottle of nice Brandy would last me years.
Post op - over the years, I started binge drinking. Specially when I got hernia, and pain after eating. I founf out that a glass of wine, or a shot of Brandy would relax my insides and reduce the pain. Problem was I would not stop on one glass. Or one shot.
I am not sure if would call myself an alcoholic, because as long as I did not start with the first "glass" I had no problem not drinking.
I know I have to be very careful about alcohol.
What's more, since I am on SSRI (antidepressants) they do affect me when I do have the first drink. There are some studies that link SSRI with alcohol cravings/addiction.
IMO- most of us post op RNY, or any other WLS should avoid alcohol at any cost.
I know that I need to.

Thank you for sharing your story. It's one thing to be warned about transfer addiction from the surgery team & forum members, but that same warning from someone actually living it is much more powerful. I'm so glad you're doing the work of recovery and getting the help you need. Good luck!

You're very brave for posting your struggles & I wish you well in your recovery. Thank-you for sharing.
Sadly enough cross addiction is a real problem & plenty of people come on these boards asking when they can go back to drinking. Even when many people say stay away from drinking, they're treated like they're meanies.
No one wants to be an addict. The mental journey of wls can be just as hard or harder than the physical one.
Good luck in your recovery

Thank you for sharing. It's important for people to hear. Keep up the great work.
As a side note, I find it so strange that many of us who ate our way to the point of needing a surgical intervention can somehow manage to dismiss the idea that alcohol can become a serious issue post op.
Transfer addiction is real.

Thank you for sharing. My Bariatric Centre in Guelph, now recommends that post-ops never drink. Their research has shown a high incidence of alcoholism post WLS.
