Kaiser insurance- high BMI

My husband is over 600 pounds and is having trouble finding a surgeon through Kaiser that will do surgery on him with a high BMI. At one point he had lost 100 pounds and was at 520 pounds and was still denied. Since then he has gained all of the weight back. Over the years he has tried to lose weight, but has not had success. We cannot afford to pay for the surgery out of pocket to go outside of Kaiser. Does anyone know of a surgeon who has experience with patients with very high BMIs through Kaiser? We are in Northern California, but we will travel if needed.

Perhaps you should contact Dr. Nowzaradan of "My 600 Pound Life".

We did contact the show and he did get a response back, but he has yet to send any of his health history and pictures they requested. He really doesn't want to be on tv so that would be last resort.

You've probably already tried this, but have you requested a case manager from Kaiser to help you navigate this?

He did have a case manager, but the doctor that they found had an unobtainable goal for him. This would have also been the first surgery for the doctor around my husbands size which made us nervous.

Can you continue working with a case manager to find another surgeon then?

Yes, we recently requested that they find another doctor for him. He has seen 4 Bariatric doctors over the last 5 years. He was so frustrated that he gave up and gained back the weight he lost. He is motivated to try again, I just want to find the right doctor so he has a chance this time.

That sounds very frustrating, I'm sorry.

Do you have a copy of the insurance requirements, and information about why he was denied at 520lb?
