Trying not to lose too much weight before surgery

I am trying not to lose more than 20 pounds before surgery, as I don't know if I will be eligible if I lose too much weight. How do you maintain a certain weight if they want you eating better and exercising before surgery?

I'd recommend calling your insurance company and surgeon and asking them if there is a "too much" that you could lose during the pre-op period.

My centre went by referral weight, and didn't care if the pre-weight loss brought you to a BMI that was too low to qualify. They said they would still go by the original weight at time of referral.

My insurance went by referral weight, which was a good thing because I had a 6 month required supervised weight loss period. Call your insurance company to find out the specifics.

I was told by the nutritionist not to lose too much as well. I needed to stay above a certain weight until the insurance company approved it and then I could lose as much as I was able. I'd check with your progr to see what the requirements are for your insurance.

I would try to build more muscles. Muscles are worth any weight you put on you. or almost any weight.

weight lifting vs cardio exercise may help you to do that.

FYI: eating healthy and eating to lose weight may be really different. I used to eat "healthy" up to my 250 lbs. most organic foods, lots of fruits and vegetables. Too many fruits, as I found out.

Hmm..yeah, check insurance. Mine went by referral weight and actually said I could have no net gain during the 6-month prep program...it didn't say anything about losing too much.

I am still in my 6 month weight management program required by my insurance company and I have lost 35 lbs. I was worried I was losing too much as I went from an "Extreme Obese" BMI of 43.3 to an "Obese" BMI of 39.3. I didn't think I had any co-morbidities, but I was diagnosed with sleep apnea 2 months ago.

However, my weight management program doctor said they will submit the referral weight and not to worry. I hope he is right.
