Be careful of what you order at Sonics

I don't order any specialty drinks anywhere because I just can't trust them. It's easier to make my own or stick to just diet soda.

Same experiences for me! It's amazing these places don't seriously injure/kill people regularly (maybe they do). I pretty much no longer order anything "sugar free". But while I still was, I would only do it at places where I could watch the workers and make sure they gave me the right stuff! Got dosed with sugar a couple of times prior to that and it was unpleasant to say the least.

It can even happen at restaurant where you wouldn't fathom the dish would have sugar in it. I went to a vegan restaurant for brunch yesterday where I got a cup of corn chowder and a tofu scramble. I am guessing the soup had sugar, because I had a bit of an RH episode an hour or two later.

It's a good thing I rarely go out, and make virtually all my food for myself. It's really the only way to truly control what goes in your body.

I've become pretty jaded about most restaurants. My BF is allergic to tree nuts and other various things. Even when you ask for the ingredients they aren't always forthcoming, or don't know what is in things if they come from outside the restaurant. After many trips to the ER we have learned the hard way. You would think that someone would sue them, which may make them wise up and know what the ingredients are in all of their dishes.

I have a weird food intolerance and it has definitely made me super wary. I know the places that are "safe" for me, and tend to avoid the rest - just in case.

I can't even trust restaurants to give me unsweetened iced tea. I have learned to taste it before I add sweetener to it. I still forget sometimes and paid the price.

Lately I just order water and even that they mess up...LOL. "Iced water, no lemon, please."

It's very frustrating for me regarding sugar free things, too. I also have Celiac and a wheat allergy together (because apparently even my body has to be extra) and often I will just get a plain grilled chicken or steak with water only because those are the two things that almost never get messed up. I say 'almost' because sometimes seasonings have food starch or wheat in them and I wound up with both joint pain and hives bloogh a few hours after a chain steakhouse experience. Turns out the seasoning had wheat :(

It's extremely annoying, but at least it saves me money I guess?

Sugar free foods are even more notorious because a lot of times people are not accustomed to using the alternatives. I am always paranoid about it now.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

Yeah, I have multiple intolerances as well. not true allergies, but legumes cause gastritis, even with extra enzymes added... so far wheat is ok, but i have changed mine to organic and to a daily item... corn and soy are also difficult to avoid...and are in everything. Milk/whey /derivitatives are in many foods... cooking at home is so much easier and cheaper.

Yes, it happens to me all the time. I never drink my calories. I always drink diet soda, unsweet tea or water.

Fast food places mess that up all the time!!!! So unless I'm filling the drink myself, or I get served an unsweet tea so I can taste it before I put in sweetener, I taste it first to make sure it is diet. About 90 percent of the time they are right, but 1 out of 10 times, they get it wrong (I think that is a lot!!!).

Sonic Drive-In has the best ice in the world. There is no Sonic around me so when I find one I have to stop and get something with ice. I can tell if my tea is unsweetened or not.

I had many cherry limeade slushes in my past.RIP cherry limeade slush.

This is a problem I've encountered and complained about before (at McD's particularly). I have asked the folks at McD's why don't they put sugar-free drinks in cups that are clearly marked or have a different appearance to them from their regular cups. No response so far, although the workers think it is a good idea. Mix-ups like that can lead to coma or even death to a diabetic.

To their credit, if you look at the lid on McD's soft drinks they have a series of small circles that are to be indented in with the fingertip - like an upside-down "blister" - to designate certain aspects of the drink. One of them is labeled "diet", IIRC. However, it's too easy for an employee to miss (or be lazy, hurried, etc.) and not push this circle in. Also, I would guess most customers don't know about that "blister system". Therefore, you don't know whether in fact the drink you're getting is sugar-free.
