Dr Office pushing their line of food for pre-op

I just had my Nutrition class a few days ago, and my doctors office is pushing their food onto us to use for pre-op. I thought the whole point was to do a liquid diet a few weeks before surgery, not eat powdered, nasty food and protein bars/chips. I'm quite confused because everyone else I have talked to that went to other places has done the liquid or just soft, digestible low residue foods and then did the liquid thing a few days before surgery. One of the doctors in the office, his wife is the one who owns the product line. I'm not naive to think that is why they pu**** Is there anything else that I can do? I called and said I cannot afford their food not to mention everything is silly high in carbs! I'm meant to do an 800 calorie high protein low carb/low fat diet for 3 weeks before surgery and paying $300 for their food is insane to me!

I know I cannot take medical advice, but I'm desperate. I don't want to call them back and have them tell me to eat what I can afford or tolerate from their line of food. I think it's a major scam to be quite honest!

I wouldn't use their food- but how would they respond if you don't? Would they call you non compliant?

maybe you can buy a shake, or. A bar just to appease them- not the whole product line.

I'm not really sure what they would say. But I do plan on calling again Monday and telling them I'm not buying their stuff. Quite a few of the people in the FB group for the Dr's there have said they didn't eat it and just went low carb/fat high protein and low residue. I think that's what I might end up doing.

I wouldn't use it. I would drink 5 protein shakes ,low carb and low sugar ones,a day and then eat a salad with meat on it for dinner.

that was my preposterous and it worked well.

i would also buy a protein bar or two ,just to get them off my back and never discuss it with the,

they will likely pu**** on you post op also.

I think you are wise to realize it is a money making scheme for the surgeon and his wife.

I'm suppose to stay below 800 calories and the only protein shakes I found that I like are the GNC Total Lean Shakes. If i had 5 of those, it would be over 800 calories. Maybe I could do 3 and then the salad with a meat? 3 of them are 510 calories total. I just don't want to spend this money on their food that is loaded with sodium and carbs. It makes no sense!

I used total lean shakes, but actually prefer the taste of premier and i think premier is cheaper. I just did 4 shakes and low glycemic veggies. no food otherwise. but a salad with meat is fine. you could do 4 premier. and a salad with 3 oz of chicken and still be under 800 calories.

There are some medical-grade protein shakes that are expensive out of pocket, however they work well...I've been told about some by people here and also seen some used in hospitals.

Unjury is also used by many bariatric programs *in* the hospital, and is waaaay cheaper than $800 for three weeks. And, we're talking swanky top-of-the-line bariatric programs here. even expensive medical protein isn't usually 800 for three weeks, my goodness.

Hopefully it's a suggestion and not an absolute requirement. I'd wait and see what they say.

As for non-compliance, state over and over that you are 100% on board with a pre-op diet but need alternatives due to finances. Come in with some research. Unjury is a good place to start, as it is already well-known medically. Their response to that is what you need to know.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

So I just added the items from theie sample menu into my fitness pal and the total carbs was 74. That seems pretty high. Protein was about 85. I just don't see how this food is beneficial to pre op!

It sounds like it's beneficial to the wife.

Complete Nutrition, if it is available in your area....or, can order online. Approx 120 cal, 4g. Carbs, and 20-24 g. Protein. Tastes great (my opinion, of course) made w/a bullit type devise with a bit of ice-water. Approx. $1.17 a shake.

If you want to let them down easy, get a shake to try, then let them know you "just cannot tolerate the (fill in the blank--texture, taste, whatever)", and have found something you do like. Do stick with high quality whey proteins- they are not all the same.

Good luck.
