After getting RNY, how has your health been as you have aged?

Have you had vitamin deficiencies or health related issues that you believe are from this surgery?

Have you been able to live a healthy long life after RNY?

Well, I'm 14 years out, hale and hearty with no discernible issues related to the surgery. However, I'm very compliant with my labs and vitamins.

I had the surgery at 42 and will soon be 56.

I had my RNY surgery 10 years ago (as of last month) and have had the exact experience as Kim. Take my vitamins and stay vigilant with my labs and yearly appointments. Only vitamin that was low was ferritin which I fixed by changing the type Iron I was taking and amount initially to raise it. Life has been great. Would do it again.

The only side effect that I deal with if not compliant would be Reactive Hypoglycemia. You can't have sugar or too much carbs or you will experience this (or many do). If I am eating right I will not. It keeps the regain down in my opinion so not necessarily the worst problem to have. Keeps you flying straight!

Prior to WLS I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I took medicine for my blood pressure and went off it right after surgery and never went back on it in 10 years! Cholesterol I was approaching going on medine but had WLS instead!

I'm about 6 years out from my surgery and am very compliant with my vitamins and labs. At my 5 year check up my ferritin was normal but dropping and I added more iron supplements. Now my numbers are headed up. My high cholesterol, high triglycerides and diabetes are all gone and my previously uncontrolled blood pressure on three pills is now normal on one low dose pill. My surgery was the best decision I ever made. At age 59 I feel better than I did as an obese 20 year old. After a lifetime of being obese I now weigh between 118 and 123 and have for 5 years. I walk 6 plus miles a day for fun and have done many things that would have been impossible for my obese self.

I had RNY at age 44, with a BMI of 53.3, at a weight of 340. lbs, which makes me 16+ years post op...

I will be 61, next month, maintain a weight of 10-15 pounds below goal, and am in better health than I have ever been, in my adult life. YES, I do plan my meals/drink my water/take my vitamins/enjoy exercise/get and GIVE some type daily support/etc/etc...all the things I think it takes to remain successful

I would have been long dead, had I not taken charge of my health

RNY 4-22-02...
