Well this is my first post. I have an approved surgery date of 06/13/2018 for gastric sleeve. I am nervous and excited all at once. I have set realist expectations of myself and i am ready to start living and shopping for new clothes... It has been really hard finding clothes that fit when your a large man. I have a question maybe some post op members can answer for me. I like spicy foods like mustards. will I still be able to handle spicy foods after my healing is done and i'm back to solid foods?
the first few weeks my sense of taste intensified, so sweet things tasted too sweet and spicy things too spicy, so I avoided them then - but I can handle spicy now and have been able to for a long time. The only thing to keep in mind is that you can't drink while or after you eat, so you don't want something so spicy that you need to drink something right away to deal with the heat.
although keep in mind this is just my experience (with respect to the taste intensity thing) - everyone is different. You may be able to handle spicy things right away - or not at all.
I'm close to 4 months post-op and I haven't had any trouble with spicy foods. But like Catwoman7 said remember you can't drink with food so that may change how you eat. I had the same thing after surgery everything tasted too sweet. But it does change and is very individual, you may be able to eat things that others can't. It's all a learning experience finding what my pouch will tolerate, and it can change daily.

I had no trouble at all with spicy foods once I was back on the full diet-- about a month or so after surgery. One of my go-to meals was diced chicken breast topped with shredded cheddar, microwaved until the cheese melted, then a bit of habanero hot sauce on top!

Seems like it's a toss up. I have always loved hot foods, nothing changed for me. If anything i have kicked it up a notch or two. Others that i know could not tolerate it as much after surgery.
Latest concoctions are ghost pepper jerky and ghost pepper salsa. Love making and eating jerky (save a ton of $) and throw salsa on everything. I don't do the chips but like it on eggs, burger patties, cottage cheese, a spoon...
