Deciding Which Surgery to Choose

So I'm prepping for surgery - this is month 5 of 6 (minimum of 6 months but could be more depending on various factors). I see the surgeon this month and I haven't decided yet which surgery I want. I'm really close to 50/50 - maybe a slight lean to have the sleeve.

Would anyone like to weigh in?

Happy with your choice?

Wish you had chosen differently?

Problems?

Surprised by something you weren't expecting?

I know we are all so different, but I'm interested in hearing from real people what you all have experienced.

I went with RNY because I had GERD. Very happy with my choice. No, I don't wish I'd have chosen another surgery - I've been very happy with this one. No problems. Only surprise was that I lost all my excess weight. I would have been elated to get down to 200!

That's wonderful!

I was thinking about that too... GERD... I don't think I have that, but I do get heartburn sometimes and I've thought about maybe talking to my doctor about it before making the decision.

I'm so happy for you, that you lost all of your excess weight. I'm sure you worked really hard for that accomplishment.

Thanks for sharing!

Heartburn is herd. If it's at all an issue for you, go for RNY.

With your history of heartburn, VSG is a big risk.

If it were me, I'd go for RNY.

Yes I'm happy with my choice

no I would not have chosen differently

no problems

i was surprised how subtle reactions to foods could be. It took me a bit to recognize fried foods don't sit well with me. There has never been an agonizing, doubled over in pain stomach ache- or violent vomiting, diarrhea etc. I had to pay close attention cause otherwise I could have easily ignored the effects of eating something my new anatomy didn't care for.

I started with the LapBand 10 years ago. I had never had one minute of acid, heartburn or GERD symptoms before then, but it became debilitating, quickly. I revised to the RNY and it's finally gone!

I have seen a lot of people on this site develop GERD with the sleeve, and honestly I would not wi**** on anyone--it's a miserable way to live. Of course, there are many, many happy & successful sleevers, so there is a chance that you'd be very satisfied. But if I had a family member asking for recommendations, I would always steer them away from anything with a GERD risk.

As for the RNY, nothing has been too difficult. My hunger is curbed (not gone) and my portion control is much better, if I am compliant with the right foods. I can still overeat carby foods (potato chips, crackers, popcorn, etc.), but I feel very full and satisfied when eating dense protein. It keeps me on track. No regrets!

I'm almost 2 years out. No regrets for me and I lost all my excess weight. I waffled between RNY and VSG as well, but my gut told me that VSG was best for me and I am happy with that decision.

If I had any history of stomach acid, I'd choose RNY. If I had a history of diabetes, I'd choose RNY.

Otherwise, VSG is awesome.

I'm only a bit over 3 weeks out so can't comment too much on problems/surprises, but I will say that i chose RNY because the doctor said it had the best results for diabetes remission which was my number one goal. While i had to go home on diabetes meds, I was off them within the first week so it's meeting my requirements.
