So exhausted

I remember turning a corner and feeling so much better by the one week mark. But the tiredness? That lasted for quite awhile, and I took an afternoon nap daily...and I am not a napper by nature.

I was super tired for about 8 weeks and then suddenly I was back to myself again. I was alone with taking care of my infant during the day after 1 week. It was hard but it all worked out. You'll get through it!

I was exhausted and had gas pains and side pains for about a week (and I walked incessantly.)

After about day 7/8, I felt a big uptick in my energy. Of course, day 7 was also when I could have soft foods, so that may have had something to do with it.

I would explain to him that you had an operation and that you're very tired. At 8, he can mostly entertain himself if he knows that you are not feeling well. :-) I would try to rest a LOT while he's at school, as well. Then maybe in the afternoon you can have a little more energy. Make sure to get your fluids! Dehydration can also add to your sluggishness.

I have heard recovery from RNY is more exhausting then VSG due to the rerouting of our intestines that VSG does not include. The exhaustion goes away but takes time. Some longer then others.

Oh goodness. I do hope you have some help with your son handy, because now you know this is no picnic. I was extremely listless for the first couple of weeks. It was a good six weeks before I started feeling like myself again.

Hydration is key, for dehydration causes even more fatigue and adds nausea, so keep a cup nearby at all times and sip every single chance you get to reach that 64oz goal. It's hard and a full time job right now, but it gets easier. In fact, I can kill 64oz before lunch every day.

With the sharp pain and the fever, I would call the surgeon's office NOW! I was told that after my surgery, if I had a fever I should call and that if I had a sharp pain, I should call, so I'm guessing that with the two of them, you really should call!

Also, make certain you are drinking enough. If I don't drink enough, my temperature rises for some reason.

The exhaustion will go away, eventually, but your body is doing some amazing healing right now and it needs the sleep! If you need to spend more time with your son, put on a kid's movie and nap while he is sitting beside you watching. That way, you are there for him physically and yet, you get some "repair" time.
