Surgeon is switching my surgery

I was interested in VSG but when I shared my GERD history with my surgeon he said he'd only do gastric bypass on me. My aunt died of esophageal cancer 4 months after being diagnosed. She suffered from Barrett's esophagus prior to then so I wouldn't take the chance. The good news is that since my gastric bypass, my GERD has resolved, I'm off PPIs, and a post-op EGD has shown that I no longer have esophagitis.

I would say go to your appointment tomorrow having written down exactly what you want to say to the doctor and don't worry about being too polite (wink wink). This is your future and you need to understand exactly what's going on. The fact that they simply left you a message saying they were changing your surgery type without any further explanation would have me fuming.

You still have more than a month. Start researching to understand what the sleeve would mean for you.

Good luck.

I started out at a high weight of 481 lbs. On surgery day I weighed 414 lbs. Today I am a trim 265 lbs. You can lose the weight with a sleeve. It all depends on your mindset. At 265 I am 20 lbs lighter than my weight in this picture, taken on my one year anniversary.

Thank you. I only had to edit this five times thanks to the OH primitive software.

I'm glad you're taking your husband with you so you have some support.

You had asked a few posts back about a way to approach this because you don't want to upset your surgeon (can't remember your exact wording). You might consider simply asking him to confirm the voice mail message. At which point he'll likely explain what was behind his change of plans.

Switching to a sleeve looks like the worst decision possible for someone who already has Barretts, but we don't have all of the information. It sounds like he's not a brand new surgeon; there had to be something significant he saw to do that kind of a 180.

Good luck and please keep us posted. =)
