Shingles after surgery

I've had shingles once before, 5 years ago.

In the last few days I have developed shingles once again (yes, you can get it more than once) a week after surgery. A couple people have told me major surgery can reactivate it in your body.

anyone experience this or hear of it?

I've never seen it brought up here on the boards, at all. You can search the site and see if it's ever been an issue.

Poor you! Shingles can be re-activated by any type of super stressors, surgery being one of them.

I know the newbies check the trackers and the signatures so although I kind of lost track of how the rest of the weight came off, you should know that it was not fast and furious but it was slow and steady!

current BMI 24.7 that, my friends, is NORMAL!!! Strong is the new pretty!

I've had shingles and the nature of it is that it lays dormant and can be triggered at any time. I've not had any since my teens though.

Yes, what you are going through after surgery is a super stress situation. I feel for you at this time. My husband is going through shingles right now (PO RNY almost 15 years for both). We have a lot of stress in our life right now due to down sizing. His outbreak is on his left scalp. He is in a lot of pain due to the fact that the scalp and face have very sensitive nerves in it, more so than the trunk of the body. He might have to move to more than 600MG of Gabapentin at night so he can sleep.

From what I have read a third time of shingles is rare - so I do not think you will "visit" a shingles outbreak again.

Shingles is caused by a member of the herpes family, similar to fever blisters. All of the viruses in this family infest a nerve bundle and live there forever. Every person has different triggers for outbreaks, and the strain of the virus also affects how easy it is to break out. The stress of surgery and anesthesia on the body is likely the trigger in this case.

I get horrific fever blisters. My doc has never seen anything like mine. I break out if I get too much sun, get chapped lips, eat too much of certain things (peanuts & chocolate, generally), or if I get sick or majorly stressed out. Predictably, I broke out after surgery, big time.

I hope it resolves quickly for you and that it doesn't return. I have treated a number of shingles outbreaks as a nurse, and I know that it tends to be very painful.

before WLS I NEVER EVER EVER experienced what I consider a ?social ? or ? sex-transmitted ? disease.

AFTER : I have had cold sores on my lips twice in five years and itching in winter on the soles of my feet ... honestly do I feel put-upon or just that I have a ?normal? issue of my generation that is easily cured by ABREVA ?

The fun I?ve had with relationships and a boyfriend easily makes the little bit of bother and worry worth it I feel

quiet as its kept I probably had a cold sore as a child ( very mild like recently) I was told its perfectly normal and only related to the common cold virus we've all been exposed to
