I am currently waiting for an answer from my insurance. I thought I wanted VSG because I was under the impression that I could still eat fairly normal (socially) with that vs the RNY. Reading this great post has me thinking about my decision. Although I know the final decision is mine, I am trying to pick the right one since it is going to be the rest of my life, my new life, that is. I have never seen anybody say that they regret their decision. This may not be the place to say all of this but it really got me thinking about things.

Really the diets are no different especially the further out you get. I would not base my decision on that.

It's unlikely that you'll ever be able to eat "normally" if you define that as the way you ate pre-op. At least you won't be if you want to successfully maintain your hard won weight loss.
However, if you really look at how people eat, you'll see there is a very wide range of "normal" eating. I've never felt out of place withy my post-WLS way of eating in any social situation.

In my opinion all restaurants are WLS friendly. It's up to the diner to make the right selections, whether it's something off the menu or something that needs to be modified. A restaurant are there to serve you (at least most of them) and if there isn't anything you want, just ask.
Early out I would always ask for a box as soon as my food came. I still almost always have a to-go box with me - even almost 15 years post-op simply because restaurant servings are crazy big.
I'm a DSer so protein is my main focus. If I order a burger, I eat what I want - whether it's with a knife and fork or as a burger with the bread. Last week went to a new place and they had a short rib grilled cheese with tomato soup. It was awesome but I only ate half the sandwich (didn't touch the fries). I took the other half home. I graze so I was hungry around 3PM when I ate the other half :)
